Tine and the Faraway Mountain

Everest became her dream.

1. How did Tine spend her time in the Mishmi hills?

Tine spent her time by climbing the trees, running through the jungle, lying under the sun
and hearing the wonderful sounds from the mountains.

2. Why was Tine unhappy in Roing?

Tine was unhappy in Roing because the mountain from where the ‘whooshoo’ sound was
coming was very far away from Roing.

3. What did Tine do immediately after finishing school? Why?

Tine immediately applied to be a porter after finishing school because she always wanted
to go back to mountains.

4. Where did Tine meet Dr. Meitei? How did he help her?

Tine met Dr.Meitei on one of her expeditions as a coordinator. Dr. Meitei recognized
Tine’s talent, became her mentor and helped her to train as a mountain climber.

Meanings:
1. Wondrous- wonderful, almost magical
2. drawn to it- very interested in it.
3. trudged- walked with slow and heavy steps because she did not want to do
something.
4. Porter- a person who carries luggage and other heavy loads.
5. ban- a law that does not allow people to do something

After months of preparations, Tine finally reached………………………that had


called her all her life.

1. Why did Tine go to the Everest base camp in Nepal? What did she do there?

Tine dreamt of climbing Mount Everest. She went to the Everest base camp to get used to
the harsh weather before she actually began climbing the mountain.

2. What did Tine achieve?

Tine became the first woman from Northeast India to climb Mount Everest.

3. Could Tine have managed to achieve her dream on her own? Who else
helped her?

Tine was gifted mountain climber. In case of not meeting Dr. Meitei, she would possibly
never have received training to become skilled at mountain climbing. Cherring Sherpa,
who accompanied her to the top of Mount Everest also supported her and helped her to
brave the weather conditions and continue to climb to the top.

4. When did Tine summit the Mount Everest and how her efforts were
rewarded?

Tine summited the Mount Everest on 9th May, 2011 at 10:45 a.m. she became the first
woman from the North East of India to have done so.

5. How did the strong wind affect their journey?

When Tine and Cherring started climbing the Mountain, the wind kept growing stronger.
The wind was so strong that walking ahead became very difficult and climbing the
Mountain seemed to have become almost impossible. For every two steps they took, they
reeled back one step.
