DIGITAL MARKETING SOFT AND HARD SKILLS
Digital - describes electronic technology that generates, stores and processes data.
Marketing - is the action of promoting and selling products or services, including market
research and advertising.
Digital Marketing - is the component of marketing that utilizes internet and online based digital
technologies such as computers, mobile phones and other digital media and platforms to promote
products and services.
The marketing industry lives in a constant state of evolution that is new trends and technologies
emerge regularly and quickly change the way we interact with customers and prospects.
Therefore a marker requires both soft and hard skills as discussed below in order to remain
competitive.
1. SOFT SKILLS
Soft skills include personal attributes.
The soft skills are:
I) Curiosity - a digital marketer should be craving for more knowledge always.
II) Tenacity - a marketer should be robust and not give up easily despite the
challenges they encounter
III) Adaptability - a marketer should be able to handle clients’ needs depending on
factors like the client’s roster or adapt whenever the client changes their needs
including the services they may require at that particular time.
IV) Ability To Mu\ltitask - there are always a lot of things going on at once in digital
marketing such as reading the latest articles, checking on relevant tweets at the
same time the marketer is required to do their job in a way that saves time.
V) Willingness to listen and Learn - one should be willing to listen to advice,
instructions and suggestions in order to grow and get better.
VI) Empathy - one should be able to see things from someone else’s point of view.
VII) Getting Along With Others - a marketer should not be hard to deal with.
VIII) Strong Work Ethic - the marketer should be willing to work hard despite the
roadblocks encountered
IX) Honesty - should be willing to admit to their mistakes and accept corrections.
X) Being Able to say I don’t know - a marketer should be able admit when they
don’t know in order to learn more.
2. HARD SKILLS
Hard digital marketing skills are those that can be taught and therefore one can learn and
acquire them. The following are the hard skills:
i) How To Search Well - being able to dig for information and get better with
search queries so that one does not go through lots of irrelevant information.
ii) Using Excel - a digital marketer should be able to perform basic functions in
Excel so as to handle large sets of data.
iii) Conducting Research and Gathering data - a digital marketer is required to
pull data from various sources at some point. They also need to find and very
information.
iv) Using Google Analytics - this is because a lot of information can be found
Google Analytics.
v) Using At least One Major Search Engine Optimization tool - one should be
able to use the SEO tool so as to improve on their quantity and the quality of their
traffic.
vi) Communication - good communication skills are critical in digital marketing.
vii) Figuring out What’s Going On and what’s gone wrong - if traffic suddenly
drops or bounce rate drastically increases. The digital marketer should be able to
track down the potential cause.
viii) Using A Crawler - a digital marketer should familiarize themselves with at least
one crawling tool.
ix) Coding and Understanding Code - Search Engine Optimization requires basic
HTML .Coding teaches one how to think logically and improve problem-solving
skills.
