PURITY JEPKEMOI KANGOGO

1. How a visualizer/document reader works

-A document reader is a device that reads and inputs into a computer marks and
characters on a special form, as by optical or magnetic character recognition.
-It is a device that converts an electronic file or printed matter to form a suitable for use
by people with visual impairment. The output can be in form of enhanced video, speech
or braille. Some document readers acts like zoom viewers; they make characters on a
computer screen look larger.
-When printed matter is scanned, the OCR program converts the text into an ASCII file
(plain digital text). A speech synthesizer converts the text into audible words and
sentences. Braille produces elevated dots on a surface, allowing the user to read the
document.

2. How a teacher can effectively use a visualizer/document reader in his/her class

with any other electronic equipment
 Very easy to use
 Have transformed how teachers teach and students learn.
 A visualizer can capture text up to a great detail and that’s why it has started
being used extremely in the publishing industry to take photographs of the
branded products for the purpose of advertisement.
 Through a visualizer you can view negatives of a photo as positives. Its helpful
for doctors, medical students who may need to develop photos during course
work in a clinic, medical lab.
 It improves on accuracy
b) Disadvantages of document reader/visualizer
 Maintenance can be expensive
 Adjusting a visualizer can take a while. It has got to be fully set up ready to go all
the time. If it doesn’t you’ve lost time and class
 Lighting can also be an issue

4. Key points in the timeline that are a significant part of the development of the
technology in education beginning with the 1800s

 Pointed sticks-man started to use sticks to in script signs and symbols on the

 The use of print media for teaching in 1970 by the Open University
 The creation of a cheap and reliable postal system in the 1840s led to the
development of the first formal correspondence education with the University of
London.
 Audio-conferencing-was used to supplement other teaching media.
 The development of video compression technology and relatively low-cost led to
the introduction of lecture capture systems for recording and streaming classroom
lectures.
 Video-conferencing-using dedicated cable systems and dedicated conferencing
rooms was used in teaching learners.
 Web-based learning management system in 1990s
 Television for schools and general adult education in 1960s.
