a) DEFINITION OF TERMS:
1. Family
A socially recognized group usually joined by blood, marriage, cohabitation
or adoption that forms an emotional connection and serves as an economic
unit of society.
2. Society
A long-standing group of people involved in persistence social interaction
and sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically subject to the same
political authority and dominant culture expectations.
3. Culture
These are the Ideas, customs and social behaviors of a particular group of
people in the society including their characteristics defined by everything
from language, religion, social habits, music and art.
b) TYPES OF MARRIAGES IN AFRICAN SOCIETIES
1) Civil marriage
Is a marriage performed, recorded and recognized by a government
official. Maybe performed by a religious body and recognized by the
state or may be entirely secular. They are conducted in the registrar of
marriages, deputy county commissioner or assistant county
commissioner’s offices and a marriage certificate is obtained. If the
spouses have agreed to marry and there is no objection to the
marriage.
2) Religious marriage
A family-like union of women and men living with one family, a
common household, and having mutual marriage rights and
responsibilities, registered in the perspective religious organization.
3) Hindu marriage
It’s for Hindus and they believe that marriage is a sacred union and an
important social institution. It is between two families rather than two
individuals. Arranged marriages and dowry are customary. The
society as well as the Indian legislation attempt to protect marriages.
4) Customary marriage
Is one that is negotiated, celebrated or concluded according to any of
the systems of indigenous African customary law. Is mostly exercised
in South Africa and does not include Hindu, Muslim or religious rites.
5) Islamic marriage
In Islam, marriage is a legal contract between a man and a woman.
Both the groom and the bride express willingness of their own free
wills.

c) ROLES OF FAMILY IN EDUCATION


The parents are key educators to provide health, nutrition, sanitation and safety.
Families have the responsibility of seeking to stimulate all aspects of development
including physical, intellectual, emotional and social support for their children.
Children start to learn from their family. The following are the roles of that family
play in education:
i) Giving motivation for the children to have education-enlightening their
children on the importance of education so that they have eager to learn.
ii) Admits the child in a good school at the right time-a family should help the
child get into the education system at the required age without delays.
iii) Motivates at each stage of education by giving gifts or appreciations-family
has the role of appreciating their children whenever they perform well so that they
always remain motivated.
iv) Provides proper and timely financial support-family should give the required
financial support to keep their children at school without delays so that their
learning is not distracted.
v) Creates favorable atmosphere for studying-family should give their children
adequate time at home to do their learning activities as well as give the right
resources that they need either at school or at home.
vi) Reading together with the children-family has the role of helping their children
their reading so that they are able to progress in the right direction.
vii) Overseeing child’s activities-the family has to ensure that their children
complete their education tasks on time and in the right manner.
Viii) Giving constructive criticism-whenever children go wrong or underperform,
the family should give constructive critism and not over punish their children.
ix) Helping with home assignments-the family has the role of overseeing their
children when they are undertaking their home assignments as well as helping
them make the right choices.
x) Preparing them for tests-tests need proper preparation in order to perform well
and hence the family has to ensure that their children are adequately prepared for
their tests.
xi) Maintaining parent-teacher relationships-a healthy parent-teacher relation
aids in helping the children acquire the right and adequate education and in a
peaceful manner.
