a) DEFINITION OF TERMS:
1. Family
A socially recognized group usually joined by blood, marriage, cohabitation
or adoption that forms an emotional connection and serves as an economic
unit of society.
2. Society
A long-standing group of people involved in persistence social interaction
and sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically subject to the same
political authority and dominant culture expectations.
3. Culture
These are the Ideas, customs and social behaviors of a particular group of
people in the society including their characteristics defined by everything
from language, religion, social habits, music and art.
b) TYPES OF MARRIAGES IN AFRICAN SOCIETIES
1) Civil marriage
Is a marriage performed, recorded and recognized by a government
official. Maybe performed by a religious body and recognized by the
state or may be entirely secular. They are conducted in the registrar of
marriages, deputy county commissioner or assistant county
commissioner’s offices and a marriage certificate is obtained. If the
spouses have agreed to marry and there is no objection to the
marriage.
2) Religious marriage
A family-like union of women and men living with one family, a
common household, and having mutual marriage rights and
responsibilities, registered in the perspective religious organization.
3) Hindu marriage
It’s for Hindus and they believe that marriage is a sacred union and an
important social institution. It is between two families rather than two
individuals. Arranged marriages and dowry are customary. The
society as well as the Indian legislation attempt to protect marriages.
4) Customary marriage
Is one that is negotiated, celebrated or concluded according to any of
the systems of indigenous African customary law. Is mostly exercised
in South Africa and does not include Hindu, Muslim or religious rites.
5) Islamic marriage
In Islam, marriage is a legal contract between a man and a woman.
Both the groom and the bride express willingness of their own free
wills.
