DRUG

STUDY
Drug study helps the nurse administer the drug
safely. Included in the drug study are all the details
needed to make sure that the medication will be
administered properly following the 10 rights of
administration.

PARTS OF THE DRUG STUDY


1 GENERIC NAME
The commone name and non-proprietary name of the drug. This
helps the public to compare branded drugs based on their
preference. (Note: written in all small letters)
Ex. amoxicillin

BRAND NAME
is the proprietary name of the drugwhich identifies who
manufactured it. (Note: Written with the First letter in Capital
letter)
Ex. Amoxicillin

3 DOSAGE
indicates the therapeutic dosage which is safe for use
depending on age and client's condition.

ROUTE
refers on the way the medication will be administered to the
body.
Ex. Orally, Intradermal, Topical, buccal

THERAPEUTIC CLASS
indicates the group of drugs according to the target body system
or the physiologic action of its therapeutic use.
Ex.
According to therapeutic use - Antibiotics

PHARMACOLOGIC CLASS
indicates the group of medicationd according to its combines
mechanism of actions, physiologic effect and chemical structure.
Ex. Para-aminophenol derivatives

INDICATION
pertains to the disease/s to be treated by the given medicine and
to whom this medication is intended to.

MECHANISM OF ACTION
explains how the drug provides a therapeutic effect including
the effects that happen when the drug combines with cellular
drug receptors

CONTRAINDICATIONS
are circumstances by which the used of the drug will cause
undesirable effects. Tells you to whom the drug should be given
cautiously or not given at all.

SIDE EFFECTS
secondary effects of drugs which may be predictable resulting
either desirable or undesirable effects

ADVERSE EFFECTS
drug effetcs which is unintentional and/or unexpected after
administration of drug in normal dosage. These are always
undesirable.

the expected interventions of nurses that includes the use of the
nursing process.
