The Freedom Fighter Trio: Benoy, Badal and Dinesh

Early Life
Benoy Krishna Bose was studying medical in the Sir Salimullah Medical College now in Bangladesh before being
influenced by Hemachandra Ghosh. He then joined the revolutionary group Mukti Sangha.

Badal Gupta was inspired by Nikunja Sen a school teacher and joined revolutionary group Bengal Volunteers
which was organized by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Dinesh Gupta who was studying in Dhaka College also joined the same Bengal Volunteers group as Badal Gupta.
Struggle and Sacrifice
In 1930 Benoy shot the then Police Inspector General Lowman in Medical School Hospital in Dhaka during the
‘Operation Freedom’ to protest against the police repression in different jails in Bengal and escaped to Kolkata.

Then the three comrades Benoy, Badal and Dinesh decided to kill the I.G. of prison N.S. Simpson and his fellow Britishers
to strike terror into the heart of the British Raj’s official circles. This attack was planned in the Writer’s Building in the
heart of Kolkata on December 8, 1930.

The three young men in their late teens / early twenties dressed in European attire and armed with revolvers launched a
stinging attack in the Writers building and fought a brave battle with the Police force who were large in numbers.

Refusing to surrender Badal Gupta ingested Potassium Cyanide while Benoy and Dinesh shot themselves with their own
firearms. Of the three brave hearts Badal and Benoy died on the spot and in the hospital respectively. Dinesh was
arrested and convicted in the court and sentenced to death.

Success and Contribution

The martyrdom and self-sacrifice of Benoy, Badal, and Dinesh inspired further revolutionary activities in Bengal in
particular and India in general.

After the independence, the Dalhousie square was named B.B.D. Bagh - after the Benoy-Badal-Dinesh trio. In memory of
their writers' attack, a plate was engraved in the wall of Writers' Building, first floor.
