Sports
Assessment task 1

Formulate thoughts and arguments based on own knowledge, views,

reading and research.

Answer :
Arguments against allowing performance-enhancing drugs

It's the taking part that counts, not the winning

Allowing drugs would focus more on winning, not taking part

Opponents say: but winning already matters to a lot of people, because we celebrate
and reward it

Drugs are against the spirit of sport, even if the rules don't ban them

Proponents and opponents disagree on just what the 'spirit of sport' means!

If the 'spirit of sport' includes the idea of hard work, taking drugs may be seen as a
way of succeeding with less effort

Opponents say: but we allow some enhancements and drugs, so to ban others is
hypocritical

Opponents think previous attempts to draw a line between acceptable

enhancements and 'bad' ones have been inadequate and arbitrary

Many performance-enhancing drugs pose severe health risks

The risks of the newer drugs aren't even known, and won't be until the long-term
effects are studied

Unless they are informed, athletes cannot properly make their own decisions

Taking drugs amounts to harming oneself, or risking harm unnecessarily, and for
some people that is sufficient reason to say it's unethical

Allowing drugs promotes unhealthy and dangerous behaviour

Drugs pose severe health risks

Amateur sports players would be encouraged to take drugs if professional athletes

openly did it

Amateur players and the public do not have the medical support or advice available
to professional athletes

Taking drugs without proper advice and monitoring would pose a much greater
danger to them

If drugs are allowed, drug advertising and sponsorship will presumably be allowed

This poses similar ethical problems to the debate about tobacco advertising in sports
like Formula One

Assessment task 2

Find out a) winning times in any sporting event at the Olympic Games
and b) the winning times in your chosen sporting event when the Games
were held in these recent years. What are the reasons for improved
performance over the last 50 years or so?

Answer :
a. Olympic Games, athletic festival that originated in ancient Greece and was revived
in the late 19th century. Before the 1970s the Games were officially limited to
competitors with amateur status, but in the 1980s many events were opened to
professional athletes. Currently, the Games are open to all, even the top professional
athletes in basketball and football (soccer). The ancient Olympic Games included
several of the sports that are now part of the Summer Games program, which at
times has included events in as many as 32 different sports. In 1924 the Winter
Games were sanctioned for winter sports. The Olympic Games have come to be
regarded as the world’s foremost sports competition.

b.CEBU CITY, Philippines — At 14, Wilbert Aunzo desired to perform in front of a big
crowd.

His dream was fulfilled several times over the years as he became a member of
Dancesport Team Cebu City.
Now dancing for 12 years as part of the team, the 26-year-old Aunzo is marking
another milestone in his career as he represents the country in the 30th Southeast
Asian Games to be held at the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.

He will be joined by his dance partner, 22-year-old Pearl Cañeda.

Aunzo, a native of Barangay Tejero in Cebu City, said representing the Philippines in
the SEA Games is the fulfillment of a dream.

“Since this is our first time to compete in the SEA Games, we’re very excited with
everything that will happen,” says Aunzo.

Aunzo and Cañeda have been dance partners for 11 years and have traveled around
the Philippines and abroad to compete.

Aunzo said they have been to Paris, Germany, Thailand and Vietnam to compete.

Aunzo said they have been training in the last eight months to make sure that they
will “wow” the crowd with their routine and eventually capture the first place in the
competition.

Assessment task 4

Discuss the following:

- has sport benefited from its mutually dependent relationship with the
media?

- has the media saved sport from economic disaster when it was
becoming more expensive and had fewer people paying at the gate?
- has sport been manipulated for the sake of sponsors, advertisers and
passive arm chair spectators?

Answer:
√ Yes, in modern society, sport and media seeks inseparable relationship where
both exerts endless and continuous influence. Media generates profit through sports
while sports and its contents are transmitted through media. It is clear sports and
media is developing in and expanding through this symbiotic relationship.

√ Yes, affect sport, too, by changing the way sports are presented to the audience. ...
The media can also have a negative effect on sport such as only the really popular
sports get much attention on the TV and in newspapers etc. This doesn't help
encourage people into the less popular sports.

√ Yes, while the sport industry has grown into a multi-billion dollar international
business with unique ethical concerns, there is little empirical research examining
the ethics involved in sport sponsorships, especially sponsorship of alcohol and
tobacco brands. This study investigates the potential influence of culture and gender
on future practitioners' willingness to work in the tobacco and alcohol sport
sponsorship areas. The nature of the relationship between sports, alcohol and
tobacco is reviewed, along with past research on variables noted to influence ethical
decision making. Three hypotheses are investigated for differences between
American and Australian students. A cultural difference in ethical perceptions is
supported, while gender differences are not significant. The implications of these
findings are discussed, along with the study's limitations and future directions for
ethics research in sport marketing.
