Attending Summer Bridge Academy (SBA) this summer and being enrolled in English 5

has been the most challengin»cbut yet rewarding experiences that has happened
throughout my
educational journey. When I received my SBA schedule and noticed that English 5 was listed a

one of my courses. I realized that perhaps the Educational Opportunity Program (EOPkhad

placed me in the wrong English class because English 5 is college level English, and I did not

anticipate that my literacy skills were at that level yet. However, I did not question my eco- D
enrollment in the course, but rather told myself that I was up for the challenge. Being halfwa

through this course, I can say that it has definitely not been easy. I have encountered many

ban-iers in this class ranging from not comprehending the writing prompts to not fulfilling the

word count requirement for my essays. Nonetheless, I can clearly say without hesitation that

have met the course goals for English 5.

Our English class is measured by Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) which are

composed of 4 goals. These 4 goals are the following: l) Develop awareness of how

communities shape reading, writing and research 2) Explore a writer's identity in relation to the

politics of language 3) Engage in reflective and metacognitive processes 4) Compose rhetoricall

effective texts, informally and formally, in a variety of mediums or genres. These goals have

been satisfied by accomplishing a variety of essay genres, providing feedback to my peers and

3) cLa.p-ceÆO
in analyzing
summarizing, evaluating, as well as citing sources. In the next sections I go in depth

how I have successfully executed the 4 goals that have been laid out in my English 5 class.

In goal number 1, the learning outcome is for students to become aware of how

communities form reading, writing, and research. This can be done by analyzing how writers

influence rhetorical choices, examining how reading and writing are situational and

circumstantial, and apply it to a variety of effective reading, writing, and studying strategies.

Over the course of this class, I have completed readings that are depended upon a given situation.

For example, recently I read about a dialogue that a professor had with a student who was

seeking assistance in how to conduct research. I learned that readings also include stories shared

from others through a dialogue. In fulfilling this goal, I have also applied effective writing

techniques. Since I know I talk a while to process my thoughts into paper, I tend to begin my

writing process way before its due. This allows time for me to go to the writing center and ask

for help. This is a strategy that I have began applying it recently because I had many grammatical

errors throughout my writing in this course.

Goal number 2 talks about how writers' culture and language shape their identity in the

reading and writing process. In particular, it is important to contribute to language and culture

influence reading and writing because we grow as individuals that come from different

perspectives. As such, I met this goal by having enrich conversations and dialogue with peers

and faculty member that come from a variety of cultures and as a result, how their readingand

writing have been shaped. For example, I shared that being bilingual has tremendouslyshaped
to comprehendEnglish
my readings and writing skills. As a result, it has been more challenging
literacy because of my native
language being Spanish. This goal as also been satisfied by my
autobiography essay in which I
speak to my literacy experience and in particular that challenges
I have encountered. In this
writing project, I mentioned that adapting to reading and writing in
English have been tough because
of my background in language and culture. Although I have
satisfied this goal, it has been the
least from the four that I have showcased this summer because
of the exposure that I have had with different languages and culture.

Goal #3

Goal number 3 suggest the process of reflection upon ones reading, writing, and research

process. One of the areas by which this goal has been met is by proving, receiving, and

incorporating feedback from peers, instructor, and tutors. Throughout this course a constant thing

that I have done is proving feedback to my peers writing. I have provided feedback to several of

my peer's essays. In return, this has help me adjust my readings skills because of the different

perspectives that my peers provide. In addition, I have received substantial feedback from my

own writing projects. The feedback that I have receive from peers and instructor has been

wonderful because I am able to revisit my writing and make adjustments accordingly. For

example, in my autobiography, I wrote the paper without a general flow. My introduction

paragraph did not tie into my body paragraphs and many of my body paragraphs did not have a

clear topic sentence. However, after receiving feedback from my instructor, I can revise and

make the necessary changes.

One of my biggest challenges from meeting all the standards from the SLOShas been

completing goal number 4. One aspect of goal number 4 is that students summarize analyze,

evaluate, integrate, and cite sources. This goal was teeempkshiqg in my research paper. For this
had to read,

all new to me, as I have never
summarize, evaluate, and cite. This process was 1

education. Another component of this goal is that
the goal was satisfied by completing
generating, drafting, revising, and editing. This part of
I am going through the process of
multiple essay drafts, revising, and editing them. Currently,
tutor, I have been able to observe
revising my first essay project. With the help from my writing
example, I have began to take
and capture editing strategies that can help me in the future. For
and would think that

the requiremen
I would be able to memorize all the edits, but I was wrong. Although meeting

for this goal was not an essay task for me; however, I have achieved it.

Conclusion

In sum, I have accomplished and satisfied all four goal required by my English 5 course.

It has not been an easy task. There has been numerous challenges that I have countered

throughout this course. However, I have also learned more than I thought possible in a short

period of time. I have noticed that my literacy skills have exponentially grown. Looking back at

my essay drafts, I have noticed the grammatical errors that I have made. Although I have made

significant growth,I know that I'm faraway from having the literacy skills needed to successfully

accomplish a bachelor's degree. I plan on using the information that I learned in this course to

further my writing in my general education courses as well as in English 20. Additionally, it will

help in satisfying the Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) and writing intensive course.
