Rebranding Statement 
September 2017 
 
 
As we continue to nourish Kansas City by providing equitable access to healthy food throughout our 
community, our work is expanding and evolving.  
 
Supported by the Episcopal Church for nearly 30 years, ECS started as a place for parishes to incubate and 
grow social service programs, including Turner House Children’s Clinic in Wyandotte County.  
 
In 2005, after 25 years of its operation as a ministry of Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral, ECS took the helm of 
Kansas City Community Kitchen. From there, our focus shifted to feeding the hungry and in empowering the 
poor to move beyond the barriers of poverty with dignity through education and job training.  
 
Today we continue in this work and have begun efforts to do much more, shaping public policy around food 
insecurity (hunger) and other efforts to address the root cause of poverty. 
 
Growing into a nonprofit solely focused on addressing food insecurity, we discovered that our name – 
Episcopal Community Services – does not fully represent who we are and the work we do. This prompted a 
yearlong, collaborative effort and public outreach campaign to rename the organization. Understanding the 
sensitivity involved with rebranding, our process – shepherded by a branding consultant familiar with the 
Episcopal Church and several community leaders ‐‐ considered our past, present and future.  
 
Our core values will continue to preserve our history and deep roots as a faith‐informed organization 
dedicated to addressing hunger. Looking to the future, our new name will represent the initiatives we are 
building and better represent those who dine with us, our volunteers and the growing number of community 
partners who make our work possible. 
 
Through rebranding ECS, we are inviting a broader audience, including more individuals, community 
organizations and businesses, to share in our mission to nourish Kansas City and build a food‐secure region.  
Our goal is to ensure that the amazing work we do can survive and thrive for years to come. We are confident 
that together we can stir thoughts, transform beliefs, and inspire change through action.
