Learning Competency MELC No.17:

Soil is capable of supporting plant life and is vital to life on earth. Since this is a natural resource this can be categorized
into different soil types. Each soil type differs in color, texture, odor and its ability to hold water. Some soils are good for
planting while others are not.

Soil can be categorized into sand, clay, and loam types of soil based on the dominating size of the particles within a soil.
Let us take a look at the pictures below. Observe the picture below. D

escribe it. (or if you can find these types of soil in your backyard, you may get a little of each and observe their color,
texture and size)

1. The first picture is clay soil. As you can see in the picture, clay is made up of very fine particle of rocks. It has
the finest texture. This type of soil holds much water and becomes very sticky when wet. It can be used in making
pots.
2. The next picture is a loam soil. It is a mixture of sand and clay. It has a fine texture. It contains large number of
decaying plants and animals. Loam soil can hold enough water and oxygen, which are needed for plant growth.
3. The third picture is a sandy soil. It contains particles that are coarse and loose. It is easy to dig. This type of
soil is not good for growing plants. Because it cannot hold water well.
4. The last picture is a silt soil. Silt soil is finer than sand. It is a light and moisture retentive soil type with a high
fertility rating. As silt soils compromise of medium sized particles, they are well drained and hold moisture well.

Water comes from different sources. It may come from open or closed sources. It may also come from a small body of
water or a big body of water. Rainwater comes from clouds. There are three main sources of water. The kind of water
depends on its source. The three different kinds of water are seawater, freshwater and groundwater.
1. Seawater is salty. It contains plenty of salt. It is found in the seas and oceans. Dissolved minerals from rocks are
deposited to the seas and oceans. The most abundant of these minerals is sodium chloride, also called salt. This
makes sea water salty.
Seawater is a habitat of aquatic plants and animals. It has some health benefits in humans like reducing anxiety,
strengthens immune system, improves breathing, and cleans large intestine.
Seawater can also be useful in the treatment of different skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and others.
Oceans and seas can also serve as routes for transportation, for irrigation, and recreational activities such as
swimming, fishing and boating.

2. Freshwater is also called surface water. It is found in open but small bodies of water like rivers, lakes, creeks and
ponds. They do not contain much dissolved minerals. It does not contain salt. Surface water comes mostly from
rain. Rainwater flows from land into streams.
Freshwater is used for cleaning, washing, bathing, preparing food and other household uses. Fresh water sustains
plant and animal life. It is also used to water plants. It is given to animals to drink. Without water, plants will
wither, animals and people will die of thirst.
Freshwater in in rivers, lakes and springs is used for recreation, like swimming and boating. Clean rivers and
lakes are also a rich source of shrimps, crabs, and shellfish. It can also be used in farms for irrigation and
livestock, watering and in factories. Rivers and lakes can also serve as routes of transportation for boats.

3. Groundwater is found beneath the earth’s surface. It comes from water that seeps into the ground. It is the safe
source of water. It is considered the cleanest water and contains plenty of dissolved minerals which the human
body needs.
