PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Typical process designs for manufacturing EDC from both trains is thermally
Vinyl Chloride Monomer feature a dual cracked to form VCM and HCL. These
train design; Direct Chlorination and two products are separated in the
Oxychlorination. Distillation units. HCL is Recovered and
sent back to the Oxychlorination train.
In the Direct Chlorination train, Ethylene VCM product is used in the manufacture
and Chlorine are reacted in a catalyst of PVC.
bed to produce Ethylene Dichloride (EDC).
This is a relatively pure form of EDC. PROCESS PROBLEMS
In the Oxychlorination train, Ethylene,
Oxygen and HCL are reacted to form - Stickiness (Particle Agglomeration)
EDC. This EDC is not as pure as the in Reaction Towers
Direct Chlorination EDC and must be - Fouling in Distillate Tower
further purified through distillation - Fouling in Thermal Cracker
before entering the EDC cracking unit. - Catalyst Removal
 PECO SOLUTIONS
It is very important to maintain a high
quality reaction in fluid bed or fixed bed
reactors in both the Direct Chlorination
and Oxychlorination trains. Maintaining
high raw material cleanliness improves
the operators ability to maintain the
reaction. Peco recommends Series
55 or Chemelean filter vessels on the
incoming Ethylene and Chlorine feeds.
ComPleat or UltaPure style filter
cartridges would help to insure that
these raw material feeds remain free
from harmful particulate contaminants
that can foul reactor beds.
The next area to address is prior to the
EDC Distillation. Any catalyst fines that
may have carried through from the
Oxychlorination train need to be removed
prior to Distillation. This will insure that
the Distillation Tower does not loose
efficiency due to plugging or scaling.
Peco recommends a Series 55 or
Chemelean filter vessel with ComPleat
or UltaPure filter elements.
Both the Oxychlorination and Direct
Chlorination EDC should be filtered prior
to the Cracking Unit. Poor quality feed to
this unit can result in poor quality VCM and
HCL material. Peco recommends a Series
55 or Chemelean Filter Vessel equipped
with either ComPleat or UltaPure filter
elements.
The feed from the Quench Unit to the
Final Distillation should be filtered to
maintain cleanliness. Again, it is important
to protect the Tower from particulates
that can plug or coat surfaces and reduce
efficiency of the unit. This can lead to poor
quality VCM product. Peco, again, recommends
a Series 55 or Chemelean filter vessel with
ComPleat pleated style or UltaPure depth style
filters.
Finally, the VCM from the Distillation Units
should be filtered prior to sending it on for
further processing or raw material feed for
PVC. In this stage, the VCM is gaseous.
Peco recommends a Series 70 with either
PSFG pleated style or PEACH depth style
elements. It is important to have a filter in
this location that will maximize on-stream
life and, therefore, minimize exposure to VCM
material during element change-outs.
Any water generated from Separation
processes during the Oxychlorination process
should be filtered to remove catalyst fines
prior to wastewater treatment. Peco
recommends a Chemelean filter vessel with
Pleated Synthetic filter elements.
