SECTION C: READING
Read this passage and answer the questions.
Good afternoon listeners. This is New Radio, your local up-to-date radio
service. You asked about informal housing in the community, so we
investigated.
At the moment there are about 5.000 families living in informal dwellings
around our beautiful city. The houses were built without building permits from
the town council. As a result, the homes do not have access to basic services.
They have neither running water nor proper sanitation. Some of the houses
have illegal electricity connections, which are dangerous. There is garbage all
over the place and there are no proper roads either. The area has become a
very unhealthy environment. And when the rains start, it’s going to be even
worse.
The problem is that there is not enough affordable accommodation in the city.
People can’t afford to buy or rent the houses and apartments that are available
in the city.
Something needs to be done. So please phone in with your suggestions.
