INTRODUCTION:
As a sustainable university, ”Valahia” University of Targoviste is the promoter of actions
designed to contribute to the change of human mentalities, and of technological and
innovative transformations capable of laying the grounds for a sustainable and responsible
society.
In order to reach this goal, the university takes firm steps towards the implementation of its
yearly operational plans, as well as internal policies and strategies. This contributes to the
constant improvement of our university’s management, with the aim of effectively and
efficiently managing the allocated resources for administrative activities, education, and
research, and of diversifying our services for Romanian and foreign students.
Our university’s strategic objectives aim at the quality increase of the learning process and
the qualified development of teaching activities by the teaching staff, the development of
our research and an increase in the visibility of our research results both nationally and
internationally, the recruiting of foreign students and setting up of study programs in
foreign languages, with the purpose of situating the university on a worthy position in the
national and, why not, international classifications.
The university promotes the reform of its curricula and teaching methods and integrates in
all of its study programmes international and multicultural and multilingual competences in
order to promote the educational ideal as defined above. Being one of the most dynamic
universities in its region, VUT wants to enter the international market of universities by
promoting excellency in its study programmes and a friendly environment for both national
and international students. In this respect, the university will use of its facilities such as
campus and housing infrastructure, openness and helpfulness of its teaching and non-
teaching staff, competitive tuition fees, international partnerships, extracurricular activities,
ongoing summer schools.
1) The mission of Valahia University of Târgoviște

The mission of ”Valahia” University of Târgovişte is defined in terms of teaching and


research activities.
This includes civic and cultural dimensions, entailing the organization of the cultural,
artistic and sport life on the campus, with the aim of acquiring, in addition to the status of
didactic, professional and scientific research centre, the attributes of a leading hub of
education, civilization and culture within and beyond the social-economic area where the
academic activity takes place.

As a sustainable university, ”Valahia” University of Târgovişte is shaping, through


education, a graduate aware of the desired behavioural changes for a new way of life, a
graduate capable of having a positive impact on the economic, social, cultural and
informational environment with the intention of helping in the development of a human
society tailored for long-term development.
Demonstrating its openness to the world, ”Valahia” University of Târgovişte is involved in
the fashioning of a multicultural South Muntenia Region and contributes to the affirmation
of its humanistic and democratic values.
2) Introduction and strategic vision for internationalization:

The internationalization process of ”Valahia” University of Târgovişte involves an amount


of challenges and risks. Among the challenges, we can highlight, first of all, the ability to
mobilize the appropriate human and financial resources in order to build a sustainable
internationalization strategy leading to a growing internationalization of the university. As
the forms of internationalization of the Romanian higher education diversify, risks
associated with this process also emerge. One risk is the possibility of losing, as a result of
migration, important resources of human capital (brain drain). Another risk is that of losing
cultural identity as a result of the "McDonaldization" of those who have studied abroad and
eventually return to their home country (Altbach, 2006; Altbach et al., 2009). (This
phenomenon is mentioned also in the analysis - "Universities in the context of
Europeanization and globalization”).
In spite of this, ”Valahia” University of Târgovişte undertakes its mission of
internationalization in view of the fact that the international dimension of teaching and
research adds value to the higher education system. The international activities should
become the catalysts of major institutional revisions and planning, and they help reinforce
the institutional construction by strengthening the human, technical or/and infrastructure
capacities.
The university will adopt a policy to internationalisation and the scope is to find the
opportunities for developing knowledge and talent, and influencing the international
development in research and higher education.
”Valahia” University of Târgoviște Strategy is proposed for the period 2015–2020 and will
be centred on four main key areas, supported by a number of core activities that
characterise the university’s international involvement.
The ambition of ”Valahia” University of Târgoviște is clear: internationalisation must be
included within all academic environments and the university must create optimum
conditions to enable all components of the university to have opportunities for international
collaboration.
One of the university measures have to be: a limited number of Bachelor’s degree
programmes developed in English to ensure a balance in exchange programmes. At the
Master’s and PhD level, more than 3 programmes will be offered in English.
All subjects offered in English must comply with the same quality standards as other
degree programmes at ”Valahia” University.
The university will therefore support lecturers in developing the necessary language and
intercultural skills.
Geographically, ”Valahia” University aims to develop the existing broad collaboration with

institutions in Europe, North America, Asia.


Also, the university have to develop an collaboration with China, which has made massive
investments in research and university education in recent years. In addition, ”Valahia”
University will participate in networks and activities that provide access to strong academic
environments in other parts of the world, and cover areas that are expected to develop into
key knowledge regions within a few years.

AREA 1
Internationalization of curricula
• Overall Goal 1:
The international and intercultural consolidation /development of the curricula content,
in order to be more attractive to international students and to offer an international
experience to the national students.
• Objective or sub-goal 1) :
International exposure/lectures a key element in ensuring relevance, topical interest and
quality in the degree programmes offered. Students need to acquire important intercultural
and linguistic qualifications by participating in courses in foreign languages alongside
students from other parts of the world.
Activity A) Availability of more subjects and complete degree programmes in English.

- Increase the number of subjects offered in English. The subjects must be of the same
high quality as degree programmes in romanian and it must be ensured that future
international students (at Bachellor or Master’s level) have access to full-time programmes.
- Planning schedule for different subjects offered in English.

The defining of the UVT graduate’s identity as a goal to be reached by the means of the
internationalization of curricula.
Activity A) The defining of the subjective identity starting from the student choices of
international competences they want to acquire, teaching methods, preferred educational
experiences (formal, non-formal, informal) with the aim of identifying the needs,
expectations and directions of internationalization and establishing the connection with the
objective identity.

in mind also the peculiarities of the latter programmes (such as admission particularities,
structures to deal with foreign students, language quality).

the academic community on the direction of internationalization, quality expectations, and
create sense of being part of the change by the involvement of the entire community in
identity building.
The aim of the guide is to assist the development of the all curriculum internationalization
throughout the institution.

Activity D). Establishment of an international ”Valahia”Summer University. The aim is to


create more flexibility in the degree programmes, provide good opportunities for lifelong
learning, and boost the recruitment of international talent through increased visibility of the
university’s academic environments.
The modules must qualify for credits and – if it is considered to add value – be made
available in collaboration with strategic partner universities abroad.

Visibility and Branding


The ”Valahia” University of Târgoviște, as a modern university, needs a clear portfolio of
degree programs and research lines, a clear vision of its distinctive identity, a consistent set
of core values that define its teaching and research in a recognizable way, and a clear and
working vision on disseminating and applying knowledge in society.
We will also explore our new campus and our positioning as an international player with
deep roots in our own region. This not only gives our university its character, but it is also
where our opportunities for the future lie.
There are also a number of issues we can improve and build upon. We will be looking at
our strength in research, which has helped us build an international reputation, and our
educational vision, which has taken on a much clearer focus.
Good strategy is a combination of continuing successful existing policies and making
changes where necessary.
With that in mind, we are exploring fast to our current identity and mission, while making
efforts to profile ourselves more clearly.

In our research, we will be focusing more on our strong points, such as our high-quality
disciplinary research and the multidisciplinary approach.
We will also be focusing more closely on our teaching. We are choosing a unified and clear
educational concept for the entire university and degree programs designed to give our
students a broad sense of social awareness.
In pursuit of valorization, one of our core tasks, we intend to intensify our interaction with
our environment, alumni,and other stakeholders. As part of this objective, we are striving
to become an enterprising, externally-oriented university that is open to strategic
partnerships.
We are opting to become a leaner and more competitive university. The goal is to create a
simple, more flexible, and more transparent organization in which our employees feel they
are part of a greater whole and combine their strengths.
