 The examination will start at 9:00am on August 06, 2021 when your teachers will share
the question paper with you. Students will submit their responses via Turnitin till 9:00am
on August 07, 2021.
 Acceptable limit for plagiarism is 19%. Marks will be deducted according to the
percentage of plagiarism i.e. the higher the plagiarism, the lesser the marks.
 Do not write questions in your answers. Just write the question number according to the
question paper.
 Mention your name, roll number, section, session, instructor’s name, date, course title,
and course code in your word file.
 Please ensure that your writing is devoid of the mistakes like dangling sentences,
unnecessary shifts, confusing references, sexist language, etc. as 10% marks in each
question will be deducted for these mistakes.
 Hand written submissions cannot be uploaded / accepted / evaluated via Turnitin.
 The word limit, where applicable, must be followed. Violation of the word limit will
result in the deduction of marks.
 The rubric for checking the answers is given at the end of the question paper. Please read
it carefully and try to compose your answer in the light of that rubric.

Q1: Identify and explain the connotative / figurative language used in the following stanzas:
Up! up! my Friend, and quit your books;
Or surely you'll grow double:
Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks;
Why all this toil and trouble?

The sun above the mountain's head,

A freshening lustre mellow
Through all the long green fields has spread,
His first sweet evening yellow.

Q2: Make an outline and write a comprehensive essay on any of the following topics:

Q4: Make ten sentences (i.e. one sentence for one word) using the following pairs of
words. The sentences should be written in such a manner that the meaning of the
word becomes clear from the context:

Content: Keeping in view the question, the content of the answer must be:

 Relevant
 Complete / Comprehensive
 Original
 Correct
 Brief

Content will have 35% weightage in marking.

Language: The language must be free of grammatical errors to score full marks. The marks will
be deducted keeping in view the distortion (the difficulty faced by the reader in comprehending a
text while reading it due to poor use of grammatical structures) i.e. the more the distortion, the
more the penalty.

Appropriate use of language i.e. the student will be required to use academic language in their
answers. Moreover, it should make appropriate use of vocabulary i.e. proper terminology, if
required, should be used.

Language will have 30% weightage in marking.

10% weightage will be given to the grammatical contents (dangling sentences, confusing
references, unnecessary shifts, sexist language, etc.) taught during the semester.

Organization is sequencing of ideas to create a compact and comprehensive narrative, which

will be required of students in their subjective answers.

Moreover, the students will be required to:

 Divide Essay / Narrative into Introduction, Thesis Statement, Main Body, and Conclusion
 Divide paragraphs into Topic Sentences, Supporting Arguments / Details, Examples, and
Concluding Sentences

Organization will have 25% weightage in marking.

However, in some cases, it is possible that any one aspect is so poorly executed that the overall
answer becomes incomprehensible. In such cases, the student may be awarded zero marks.
