B.6 Reading the Story

“The Fox and the Crow”

(Aesop)

One bright morning as the Fox was following his sharp

nose through the wood in search of a bite to eat, he saw
a Crow on the limb of a tree overhead. This was by no
means the first Crow the Fox had ever seen. What caught
his attention this time and made him stop for a second
look, was that the lucky Crow held a bit of cheese in her
beak.
"No need to search any farther," thought sly Master Fox.
"Here is a dainty bite for my breakfast."
Up he trotted to the foot of the tree in which the Crow
was sitting, and looking up admiringly, he cried, "Good-
morning, beautiful creature!"
The Crow, her head cocked on one side, watched the Fox
suspiciously. But she kept her beak tightly closed on the
cheese and did not return his greeting.
"What a charming creature she is!" said the Fox. "How
her feathers shine! What a beautiful form and what
splendid wings! Such a wonderful Bird should have a
very lovely voice, since everything else about her is so
perfect. Could she sing just one song, I know I should hail
her Queen of Birds."
Listening to these flattering words, the Crow forgot all
her suspicion, and also her breakfast. She wanted very
much to be called Queen of Birds. So, she opened her
beak wide to utter her loudest caw, and down fell the
cheese straight into the Fox's open mouth.
"Thank you," said Master Fox sweetly, as he walked off.
"Though it is cracked, you have a voice sure enough. But
where are your wits?"

B.7. Answering the motivation

Class, let’s now answer the motivation before we

proceed to the discussion.

1. What advice did the fox give the crow?

: The cheese fell to the ground, right in front of the Fox. “Thank
you, Crow, “he said to the unhappy bird. “In exchange for your
cheese, I will give you some advice. Never trust a flatterer!

2. What does the fox represent in the Fox and the Crow?
: The Fox and the Crow'' tells a story about how we need to
beware of flattery. In the story, the fox is a sly creature, and we
often see foxes as sly, so he is able to come up with a sneaky way
to get the cheese. While the crow is typically a smart creature he
still falls for the flattery.
3. What lesson should Crow learn from this?
: In 'The Fox and the Crow', the Crow learns a valuable lesson
about flattery.
4. What message does a fox symbolize?
: Foxes often represent cunning, playfulness and resilience. They
walk the fine line between the wilds and urban living, making the
best of both environments.
5. What is the moral lesson of the story the fox and the
crow? : The moral of the famous “The Fox and The Crow” story is
“Never believe flatterers”.
Now that we’re done answering the guided question let’s
now proceed to our lesson discussion.

C. Discussion:

Class after reading the story we will now proceed to the

elements of the short story.

There are five elements of the short story including the:

 Character- are the players within a story. They

can be human beings, animals, aliens, or even
sentient objects.
In the story we’ve read earlier the crow and the
fox are the characters in that story.

Next element is plot

 Plot- refers to the events that happen within the

story. It includes every major turning point that
the characters experience.

The plot in the previous story is crow has found a

piece of cheese and retired to a branch to eat it.
A fox, wanting it for himself, flatters the crow,
calling it beautiful and wondering whether its
voice is as sweet to match. When it lets out a
caw, the cheese falls and is devoured by the fox.

The 3rd elements are the setting

 Setting- is a broad term for the world the story

takes place in.

The setting in the story of the fox and crow they

are in their natural forest habitat with the fox on
the ground and the crow in the tree.

And we have the theme of the elements of the

short story.

 Theme- The theme is the central idea, message,

or purpose in a short story.

The theme of the previous story is be careful who

you trust: The Crow trusts in the Fox's words of
flattery, and because of this trust, she ends up
being tricked into losing her meal.

And class we have now the conflict.

 Conflict- is any of the problems that a character

encounters in a story.

The conflict of the story the fox and the crow the
fox wants the cheese that the crow has.

That’s the five elements of the short story.

Class, have you understood the five elements of the

short story?
Now let’s go back to the story. Class, in the story you’ve
read who are the characters?

Very good! What about the theme and plot of the story? : Yes, Sir, we understand the five elements of the story

: The Fox and the Crow' is a fable about a deceitful Fox named
Master Reynard and a naive Crow
