 The Contribution of the Poultry Sector to Achieve Jordanian Food Security: A
Case Study in Jerash Governorate

The present study aims at identifying the contribution of the poultry sector to achieving
Jordanian food security by analyzing the current situation of the poultry sector and clarifying
the impact of some demographic and economic characteristics on the amount of poultry
production and measuring the level of food security for families. The data of this study was
collected through conducting a questionnaire designed to achieve the main goals of this study
and distributed to the producers, sellers, and consumers of poultry in Jerash Governorate. They
were (170) consumers, (51) producers, and (54) sellers. Both qualitative and quantitative
analyses were utilized to analyze the data and extracting results. The results showed that the
poultry breeding and production sector provides quantities of poultry meat and eggs through
its contribution to providing the consumers with proteins and increasing the amount produced
and consumed of poultry meat and eggs. That also reflects the extent to which this sector
achieves food security for the community. In addition, consumers from the families of
producers and sellers possess economic and social characteristics that enable them to achieve
food security by covering their needs from animal protein sources by purchasing them. Also,
the families included in the field survey were food-secure families at a low level, especially as
they spend a little on food. The opinions of consumers about the purchase of poultry products
showed that the rate of their spending and consumption was within the average level, and
there is a clear discrepancy in their opinions towards it. Moreover, there were several types of
food and elements found in poultry products. The study recommends directing the poultry
producers to increase their production of meat and eggs, which may increase the coverage of
the market needs through the state’s support for all production requirements, and conducting
projects at the state level.
