In this lab activity, you perform key tasks to configure for and use NetBackup's Automatic Image Replication
feature, as listed briefly on the slide.
Automatic Image Replication involves the creation of backup images in a "source" NetBackup master server
domain, and the replication of those images to a "target" NetBackup master server domain, where the backup
images are imported. Having been imported in the "target" domain, the images can be used to restore client
data in the event of a failure in the "source" domain.
When performing the tasks of this lab activity, note the lab configuration is as below:
The Windows based master server, winmaster.example.com, is acting as the "source" master server and the
Linux-based master server, lnxmaster.example.com, is acting as the "target" master server
In this exercise, you perform the steps to configure the replication source (winmaster.example.com) and
replication target (lnxmaster.example.com) to enable the Auto Image Replication feature.
Exercise A-1: Configuring a Trusted Master Server in the source domain on winmaster
example com
In the steps that follow, you configure the target master server, lnxmaster.example.com, as a Trusted Master
Server on the source master server, winmaster.example.com.
In the following steps you add and verify a replication target on the master server in the source
domain, winmaster.example.com.
At times, you may be unable to login to the NetBackup Administration Console, and the following error
message is displayed:
Unable to login, status:7656. The revocation status of the host certificate cannot
be verified using the Certificate Revocatio List (CRL), because the CRL is not
updated. It is older than seven days.
Note that the CRL expires every 7 days and must be manually refreshed in these labs.
If your master server is winmaster.example.com, execute the following command on the winmaster server to
generate a new CRL: install_path\Veritas\Netbackup\bin\nbcertcmd –getCRL
If you are issuing the command from the console server, then execute the
following: install_path\Veritas\Netbackup\bin\nbcertcmd –getCRL -server
winmaster.example.com
If your master server is lnxmaster.example.com, execute the following command on the lnxmaster server to
generate a new CRL: /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/nbcertcmd -getCRL
If you are issuing the command from the console server, then execute the
following:install_path\Veritas\Netbackup\bin\nbcertcmd –getCRL -server
lnxmaster.example.com
At times, the getCRL command may fail to refresh the certificates and the following error message is displayed:
Failed to get the latest certificate revocation list for master server [master
server name], error:[5978]
EXIT STATUS 5978: Attempt to refresh certificate revocation list failed.

You have completed the storage lifecycle policy and policy configuration
on winmaster.example.com, that is required to enable Automatic Image Replication in the source
domain.
In this exercise, you locate and verify other parameter settings that affect the behavior associated with storage
lifecycle policies in a NetBackup environment. The parameter setting changes that have been made in this lab
environment are optional, and may not be necessary or recommended in all production backup environments.
Exercise D-1: Setting SLP Parameters in the source domain (on winmaster example com)
In the following steps, you modify settings that affect the NetBackup behavior relating to Storage Lifecycle
Policies (SLPs) in the source NetBackup domain (on winmaster.example.com).
4. Expand (if necessary) the NetBackup Management entry in the left pane.
5. Expand the Host Properties entry, located under NetBackup Management.

right pane, and click Properties in the resulting menu.
8. In the left pane of the Master Server Properties: winmaster.example.com window, locate and
click the SLP Parameters entry.
The right pane of the window displays the SLP Parameters settings.
Note: The settings listed above (Force interval for small job, Job submission interval, and Image
processing interval) were changed from their default settings for purposes of this course, so that
replication and import jobs would be processed more quickly. The current settings may not be
appropriate in a production NetBackup environment.
Note: The backup administrator can modify these settings on the master server system to change
the behavior of NetBackup with regards to duplication, replication, and import operations defined in
storage lifecycle policies. In this training environment, the modifications to the SLP parameters on
the master server in the source domain were made to reduce the time that normally elapses
between the creation of backup images and the duplication or replication of those backup images.
See the Veritas NetBackup 8.2 Administrator's Guide, for details on the use of settings in the SLP
Parameters.
Note: It is not necessary to restart NetBackup for the SLP Parameters changes, because the SLP
process, nbstserv, reads the new configuration and updates automatically.
Exercise D-2: Verifying SLP Parameters in the source domain (on winmaster example com)
The SLP parameters that you modified in the previous exercise are stored in a file on the master server system. In
the steps that follow, you view the contents of this file.
1. Access the desktop of winmaster.example.com, using the credentials in the Resources tab of
the Labs on Demand environment.
C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\var\global
4. Locate and right-click the nbcl.conf file and select edit with Notepad++ in the menu.
Note: Note the entries in this file. The nbcl.conf file does not exist in a default NetBackup
installation. The file is created by NetBackup only when changes are made to the SLP Parameters of
the NetBackup master server. The file should not be edited manually.
The table below lists the default values for the parameters (in a new NetBackup installation) and
their current settings. These are the SLP parameters that you modified in the previous exercise.
SLP.JOB_SUBMISSION_INTERVAL 5 1
SLP.IMAGE_PROCESSING_INTERVAL 5 1
SLP.MAX_TIME_TILL_FORCE_SMALL_DUPLICATE_JOB 30 1

click the SLP Parameters entry.
9. Review and verify the settings in SLP Parameters pane.
You access this window again in an exercise later in this lab activity.
Exercise D-4: Verifying SLP Parameters in the parameters file in the target domain (on
lnxmaster example com)
The SLP parameters that you modified in the previous exercise are stored in a file on the master server,
lnxmaster.example.com. In the steps that follow, you view the contents of that file.
a. On the desktop, locate and double-click the REMOTE SYSTEM ACCESS folder, to open the folder.
b. In the REMOTE SYSTEM ACCESS folder, locate and double-click the PuTTY (Linux
systems) shortcut.
Command: cd /usr/openv/var/global
Command: ls -l
6. View the contents of the nbcl.conf file, using the more command.
7. Type exit at the command prompt, and press Enter, to close the PuTTY session.
Command: exit
In this exercise, you initiate a manual backup using the policy, LAB04-AIR, that you configured for Automatic
Image Replication in the source NetBackup domain. That policy uses a storage lifecycle policy (LAB04-AIR-
source-slp) that you configured to perform a backup of client data, and then to replicate the resulting backup
image to the target domain. After initiating the backup job, you monitor the resulting jobs in both the source
and target NetBackup domains, and observe the results.
Exercise E-1: Initiating a manual backup for Automatic Image Replication (on
winmaster.example.com)
In the following steps, you initiate a manual backup on the master server, winmaster.example.com in the
source NetBackup domain, using the policy that you created for the Automatic Image Replication feature -
- LAB04-AIR.
4. Select Policies entry in the left pane of the Administration Console window.
5. Right-click the entry for the LAB04-AIR policy in the All Policies pane, and then click Manual
Backup in the menu.
6. In the Manual Backup window, click OK to initiate a manual full backup of the
client, console.example.com, using the LAB04-AIR policy.
7. Allow the NetBackup Administration Console window that is logged in
to winmaster.example.com to remain open on console.example.com.
Exercise E-2: Monitoring the jobs in the source NetBackup domain (on winmaster example
com)
In the steps that follow, you use the Activity Monitor to monitor the jobs that are performed in the source
NetBackup domain, on winmaster.example.com, as a result of the manual backup request that was submitted
using the LAB04-AIR policy.
Within about one minute of the successful completion of the Backup job another job becomes
visible in the Activity Monitor.
5. Monitor the new job, a Replication job, until the job runs to completion.
Note: In addition to the Backup and Replication jobs, an Image Cleanup job also runs.
Exercise E-3: Monitoring the jobs in the target NetBackup domain (on lnxmaster example
com)
In the steps that follow, you use the Activity Monitor to monitor the jobs that are performed in the target
NetBackup domain, on lnxmaster.example.com, as a result of initiating the manual backup request in the
source NetBackup domain.
Note: Within about one minute of the completion of the Replication job in the source NetBackup
domain, the Import job is added to the Activity Monitor on the master server in the target
NetBackup domain.
6. Monitor the progress of the Import job, and verify that the job runs to completion.
7. Verify that the job completes successfully before continuing.
o If the Import job fails, record the status code, and seek assistance.
o If the Import job completes successfully, go to the next step.
Note: Within about one minute of the successful completion of the Import job, another job
becomes visible in the Activity Monitor.
8. Monitor the most recent job (a Duplication job) until the job runs to completion.
Note: In addition to the Import and Duplication jobs, an Image Cleanup job also runs.
Note: Up to this point, a backup image for the client, console.example.com was created in the
source NetBackup domain, managed by the winmaster.example.com master server, and written to
MSDP storage associated with the winmaster.example.com storage server.
After the backup was completed, the image was replicated from the storage server in the source
domain to the lnxmaster.example.com storage server in the target domain.
Note: As a result of the configuration for the Automatic Image Replication feature, the replicated
backup image was imported in the target. The import operation by the target domain's master
server domain (lnxmaster.example.com) caused the contents of the imported backup image to be
added to the NetBackup catalogs in the target domain. After the import was completed, the SLP for
the Automatic Image Replication feature caused a Duplication job that duplicated the imported
image to a tape volume in the target NetBackup domain.
Note: The nbstlutil command can be used on any master server that is configured to use storage lifecycle
policies - to display the status of SLP-managed images. In this lab environment, the command can be used on
the both master servers, winmaster.example.com and lnxmaster.example.com.
In this brief exercise, you use the NetBackup-provided nbstlutil command to view some of the types of
information that can be obtained using the command.
In the steps that follow, you use the nbstlutil command on winmaster.example.com, to view the status of
replication jobs in the source domain.
1. Access the desktop of the winmaster.example.com system, and log in using the credentials
provided in the Resources tab of the Labs on Demand Environment.
Command: nbstlutil -h
NOTE: The -h command (help) option displays a summary of the command options and arguments
for the nbstlutil command.
5. In the Command Prompt window, type the following command, and press Enter:
NOTE: The repllist command option displays status for completed replication copies and their target
devices. It lists all image, replica, and replication destination records. It provides a way to see the
configured replication destination.
7. Press Enter in the Command Prompt window, to advance the output of the command one
page.
Note: The output of the previous command could occupy multiple pages. Pressing Enter on your
keyboard advances the command output one page. You may need to press Enter multiple times to
return to the Command Prompt.
8. Press Enter on your keyboard until the Command Prompt is returned.
9. In the Command Prompt window, type the following command, and press Enter:

copies.
10. Feel free to experiment further with the nbstlutil command as time permits.
11. Type exit to close the Command Prompt window on winmaster.example.com.
12. Close the connection to the winmaster.example.com system.
In this exercise, you perform a restore of files from a replicated and imported image in the target NetBackup
domain. The backup image used for the restore operation is the backup image that was created of Windows-
based client data in the source NetBackup domain, and then replicated and imported to the target NetBackup
domain.
You will restore files from this imported and replicated image using the master server in the target
domain, lnxmaster.example.com.
In the following steps you, use the Backup, Archive, and Restore user interface launched from within
the NetBackup Administration Console on lnxmaster.example.com to perform a restore of client data that
was backed up to storage in the source domain (managed by winmaster.example.com), and then replicated
