1. General
A. Troubleshooting the main hydraulic system requires basic knowledge of hydraulics and knowledge
of an open center type hydraulic system. The troubleshooting chart is provided to use as a guide
in isolating malfunctions.
2. Tools and Equipment
A. Refer to Hydraulic Power - General, for tools and equipment.
3. Troubleshooting
A. Isolating a fault or malfunction may be accomplished by a systematic analysis of the trouble. A
visual check for leaking hydraulic fluid will aid in isolating a malfunction. A troubleshooting chart is
provided to aid in isolating a malfunction.
NOTE: If the HYD PRESS annunciator is illuminated for more than 10 seconds, the MASTER
CAUTION annunciator shall also illuminate.
B. Leaks play a major role in hydraulic system malfunctions, either externally or internally. Following
are identified causes of leaks in tubing.
(1) Causes of leaks at flare joints:
(a) Poor flare, rough surface, cracks and splits.
(b) Damage to flare.
(c) Foreign material under flare.
(d) Improper wrench torque.
(e) Insufficient support of tubing.
(f) Badly fitted or mismated parts.
(g) Careless assembly.
(h) Threads seized or galled.
(2) Causes of leaks at straight threaded joints using packings:
(a) Improper positioning of packing on fitting.
(b) Improper use of backup rings.
(c) Fitting not properly positioned in boss.
(d) Insufficient wrench torque to squeeze packing and make seal.
(e) Careless assembly.
(f) Packing not lubricated.
(g) Hydraulic reservoir external relief valve leakage as follows:
1 Static external relief valve leakage shall be zero.
2 Dynamic external relief valve leakage shall not exceed one drop per 50 cycles of
the relief valve poppet, with 0 to 100 PSI (689.5 kPa) across the seal.
