ENGINE- REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. General
A. This procedure is concerned with removing the engine for the purpose of performing maintenance
and reinstalling the engine in the same location on the airplane, or the installation of an engine
prepared (built up) for a particular location. The removal and installation procedures for the left and
right engines are typical unless otherwise stated.
2. Tools and Equipment
A. Refer to Powerplant - General for list of tools and equipment.
3. Engine Removal/Installation
A. Remove Engine (Refer to Figure 401).
(1) Close engine fuel shutoff valve.
CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the generator control unit may result in a
damaged generator control unit.
(2) Remove electrical power from airplane; disconnect airplane battery; disconnect electrical
connectors from the generator control unit.
(3) Remove engine cowling and necessary access plates, refer to Engine Cowling
- Removal/Installation .
NOTE: The forward engine cowling is mounted to the engine inlet and may be removed with
the engine.
(4) Identify and disconnect engine electrical connections.
(a) Disconnect starter-generator electrical leads at the starter-generator terminal block.
(b) Disconnect electrical terminals (2 each) from the current transformer at firewall.
(c) Disconnect engine wire bundle electrical connector at firewall connection (J66 right
engine - J67 left engine).
(d) Disconnect electrical connector from the fuel pressure switch located on the firewall.
(e) Disconnect the thrust reverser electrical connector. Access to the connector is through
the pylon access plate.
(f) Disconnect grounding strap.
(5) Disconnect and cap fuel line, hydraulic lines at the firewall.
NOTE: A suitable container and rags should be provided to catch and clean up hydraulic
and/or fuel spills.
(a) Disconnect hydraulic return line.
(b) Disconnect hydraulic pressure line.
(c) Disconnect motive flow line.
(d) Disconnect fuel supply line.
(e) Disconnect canister drained fuel return line by loosening hose clamp.
(f) Disconnect the thrust reverser hydraulic flexible hose at the pylon connectors. Access
to the fittings is through the pylon access plate.
(6) Disconnect bleed air duct upstream from firewall by removing clamp from duct flanges.
(7) Disconnect the fire extinguisher manifold from the bracket assembly. Refer to Chapter 26, Fire
Extinguisher Deployment Tubes - Maintenance Practices.
(8) Disconnect the throttle control cable as follows:
(a) Left engine.
1 Disconnect clevis from cam; remove cotter pin, nut, washer, bushing and bolt.
2 Remove bracket from feedback bracket assembly by removing bolts, spacers,
washers and nuts. Disconnect spring from bracket.
3 Disconnect throttle control telescoping unit from spindle by removing cotter pin,
nut, washers and bolt.
4 Remove nuts, washers and bolts securing feedback bracket assembly to brace.
5 Remove nuts securing support bracket to bleed air outlet.
Make sure the bonding jumper is connected to the jumper plate assembly and
(e)
ground cover plate with bolts and washers. Refer to Chapter 20, Electrical Bonding
- Maintenance Practices.
(f) Do a bond jumper resistance measurement of the bonding jumper assembly. Refer to
Chapter 20, Electrical Bonding - Maintenance Practices, for the bonding jumper, bond
jumper resistance measurement procedures.
(7) Remove weight of engine from hoist, remove lifting sling(s) and engine sling.
(8) Connect throttle control cable as follows:
(a) Left engine.
1 Position feedback bracket assembly to engine and bleed air outlet and secure with
bolts, washers and nuts.
2 Connect throttle control telescoping unit to spindle with bolt, washers (place large
washer on each side of rod end), nuts and cotter pin.
3 Secure bracket to feedback assembly using bolts, spacers, washers and nuts.
Connect spring to bracket.
4 Connect clevis to cam using bolt, bushing, washer, nut and cotter pin.
(b) Right engine.
1 Position feedback bracket assembly to engine and bleed air outlet and secure with
bolts, washers and nuts.
2 Connect adjustable rod end to fuel control lever with bolt, washers (place large
washer on each side of rod end), nut and cotter pin.
3 Secure bracket to feedback assembly using spacers, washers and nuts. Connect
spring to bracket.
4 Connect clevis to cam using bolt, bushing, washer, nut and cotter pin.
(9) Connect fuel and hydraulic lines at the firewall.
(a) Connect canister drain fuel return line by placing hose end over fitting and secure with
hose clamp.
(b) Connect fuel supply line.
(c) Connect motive flow line.
(d) Connect hydraulic pressure line.
(e) Connect hydraulic return line.
(f) Connect the thrust reverser hydraulic flexible hoses to pylon connections. Access to the
fittings is through the pylon access plate.
(10) Identify and connect engine electrical connections.
(a) Connect electrical connector to the fuel pressure switch located on the fuel supply line
at the firewall.
(b) Connect engine wire bundle electrical connector at firewall connection (J66 right engine)
- (J67 left engine).
(c) Connect electrical terminals to the current transformer at the firewall.
(d) Identify and connect starter-generator electrical leads to terminal block on
starter-generator.
NOTE: On left engine the starter-generator ground wires are connected at the terminal
strip on the forward cowling bulkhead.
(e) Connect the thrust reverser electrical connector. Access to the connection is through the
pylon access plate.
(11) On engine not having the engine bleed air system installed prior to engine installation, install
engine bleed and refer to Engine Buildup - Maintenance Practices.
(12) On engine not having the forward cowling installed prior to engine installation, install forward
cowling, refer to Engine Cowling - Removal/Installation.
(13) Connect bleed air to airplane system.
(14) Install the fire extinguisher manifold to the bracket assembly. Refer to Chapter 26, Fire
Extinguishing Deployment Tubes - Maintenance Practices.
(15) If thrust reverser was not installed prior to engine installation, install thrust reverser. Refer to
