Boeing 747-400 Flight Crew Operations Manual

Flight Crew Operations Manual

Blue Temporary Bulletin
Number: 400-18-1 R3
Date: July 30, 2021
Subject: Takeoff N1 limits for the engines controlled by ABC
engineering due to possible EGT overlimit.
Reason: To inform flight crews about the takeoff procedure
specialties.

Information in this bulletin is developed by “AirBridgeCargo

Airlines”. In the event of conflict with the FAA approved AFM, the
AFM shall supersede. The revised procedures described in this
bulletin have priority over current FOM Part B procedures as
having a direct and indirect bearing on safe operation of this model
airplane.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
AirBridgeCargo Airlines has experienced CF6-80C2 engine EGT
normal operating range exceedance during Takeoff in high OAT
environment conditions.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Takeoff Performance Calculation
All the CF6-80C2 engines are controlled by ABC engineering for the
EGT margin and Sea Level Outside Air Temperature Limit
(SLOATL). This temperature (SLOATL) is not considered
as operational limit. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized that if
airfield sea level OAT is at or above this SLOATL the use of
Full Takeoff Thrust can lead to the engine EGT overlimit.
The lowest SLOATL (among four engines) is printed in “DI List for
Crew” in red color letters as follows: “Engine EGT limit exceedance
is possible when OAT at sea level is +XX oC or above”.

Note: For every 1000 feet of airfield pressure altitude, the OAT limit
shifts roughly 2 OС lower (standard lapse rate).
When airfield OAT is equal or above temperature value mentioned in
“DI List for Crew” (corrected for pressure altitude) required crew
actions are:
1. Use the longest runway when applicable.
2. Use the full runway length.
3. Use Derate or/and Assumed Temperature methods during takeoff.
This reduces the possibility of engine temperature exceedance.
Note: If the OAT is equal to or higher than the specified value,
the flight will be dispatched and maximum commercial load
adjusted so that the required Takeoff thrust does not exceed
the TO1 value.
CAUTION: The use of maximum thrust (Full TO) greatly increases
the possibility of EGT limit exceedance. If OPT
calculated Takeoff thrust is only FULL TO option for
conditions the crew should delay takeoff and consult
with OCC.
4. Minimize flaps setting for takeoff with assumed temperature.
5. Ensure OAT used to calculate TO data is updated just prior to
departure.
6. If the calculated Takeoff thrust does not meet the SID gradient
requirements consider using higher Climb thrust (e. g. CLB instead
of CLB1) rather than overriding the Takeoff thrust.
7. Consider the SID change in liaison with ATC.
8. If finally unable to comply with SID requirements (gradient, speed
limits) inform ATC and request alternate departure clearance (radar
vectors or extra track miles).
9. Use extended warm-up times on the first flight of the day to reduce
the peak EGT on takeoff.
Note: If an engine EGT exceedance occurs after thrust is set and the
decision is made to continue the takeoff, do not retard the
thrust lever in attempt to control the exceedance. Retarding
the thrust levers after thrust is set invalidates takeoff
performance. When the PF judges that altitude (minimum 400
feet AGL) and airspeed are acceptable, the thrust lever should
be retarded until the EGT value is within limits and the
appropriate NNC accomplished (FCTM Boeing 747-400/8).

CAUTION: If during takeoff the conditions where additional thrust

is needed are encountered (such as a windshear
condition, EGPWS alert, etc.) the crew should not
hesitate to manually advance thrust levers to maximum
thrust (QRH Boeing-747-400/8).
