1.2 GENERAL
The Sonopuls 490/491 are microprocessor controlled units for ultrasound (US.) therapy.
The Sonopuls 491 offers besides ultrasound therapy also electrotherapy (E.T.) which can
be combined (E.T. and US).
Both units are equipped with large LCD displays with around the operating keys for a
clear display for the parameter settings. The units are battery powered and thus operate
independently of the mains supply. The light weight and compact design makes the unit
also suitable for treating patients at home.
Therapeutic possibilities
Sonopuls 490:
Sonopuls 491:
The complete set consists of a drive unit (the Sonopuls 490/491) and two multi-frequency
(1 and 3 MHz) ultrasound treatment heads (UTH's). The drive unit supplies the drive
current for the treatment head(s). The UTH consists of a crystal which is cemented to
the treatment surface and which converts the electrical signal from the drive unit into a
mechanical vibration (i.e. the ultrasound signal). There are two types of treatment heads
available, one type of 1 and 3 MHz with a large treatment surface and one type of 1 and
3 MHz with a small treatment surface and are suitable for subaqual treatments.
The Sonopuls 490/491 offers the possibility of storing frequently used settings (maximum
10) in the computer memory. This allows the user to create a file of preferred therapy
modes and parameter selections. The most frequently used settings can be stored as
program number 0 (zero). This program is automatically selected after switching on.
All treatment heads are provided with contact control indicators. This feature, in
combination with the excellent beam characteristics, maintains the quality of the
treatment. Maximum safety is inherent in the design of the unit.
Both the electrical safety and the ultrasound safety of the Sonopuls 490/491comply with
the stringent IEC 601-1, IEC 601-2-5 and IEC 601-2-10 safety standards.

2 DESCRIPTION
Because of the modular construction of the Sonopuls 490/491 the description is on block
diagram level.
The function of the application module is to supply the drive current (US.) for the
ultrasound treatment head (UTH) and to supply the output currents (E.T.), (Sonopuls 491
only) as specified for the Sonopuls 490/491. The Ultra sound drive current is an
alternating current at a frequency of 1 or 3.1 MHz and can be either continuous or
pulsed.
Sonopuls 490:
Sonopuls 491:
The treatment heads can be used with every Sonopuls 490/491or Sonopuls 992 unit
without any necessary circuit (power) adjustment. Calibrated measuring circuits in both
the Sonopuls 490/491 and the treatment head ensure that the electrical characteristics of
each treatment head matches with every Sonopuls 490/491 or Sonopuls 992 unit.
The user interface module communicates between the application module and all user
controls (selection keys, amplitude control(s) and parameter control) and LCD display.
In the configuration of the Sonopuls 490/491 units, the user interface module is used in
combination with a custom LCD display. The user interface PC Board is identical for all
Sonopuls 490/491 units.
For the repair and maintenance procedures of the Sonopuls 490/491 the following test
equipment and accessories are required:
- Digital multimeter 3 1/2 digit, accuracy better than 1 %. For example Fluke 77.
- Two beam oscilloscope, 60 MHz, accuracy better than 5%. For example Philips PM
3055
- Safety tester according IEC 601-1. For example a Biotek 601 PRO
- 1 Resistor 500 6, 10 W, 1% (E.T. output circuit check)
- 1 Resistor 1k 6/1W (battery charger circuit check)
- 1 Resistor 18 6/10W (battery charger circuit check)
- Ultrasound calibration dummy (see spare parts list, item no: 5)
- Ultrasound dummy load with adaptor ring, see note below (see spare parts list, item
no: 6)
Note: The ultrasound dummy load, part number 1417802 (item 017), is only used as
an optimum acoustical load for ultrasound frequencies and can not be used as
an output meter.
Note: The ultrasound dummy load must be filled with degassed water. Boil the water
for approx. 15 minutes. Wait for the water to cool down to room temperature (±
20 (C) before use.
It is assumed that a complete set of precision engineering tools is available. For the
service of the Sonopuls 490/491 units the following additional tools are required:
4 MAINTENANCE
4.1 GENERAL
4.2 CHECKLIST
The following procedures must be carried out during an inspection and/or after every
repair:
4.2.1 Modifications, if any, according to the "Service Info" sheets. See appendix C of this
manual for further information.
4.2.2 Visual inspection. Check the electrical wiring for safety and check that all components
are properly fastened. Check that the fuses have the specified ratings (see par. 1.3.1).
Connect the Sonopuls 490/491 by means of the battery charger to the mains supply and
switch on the equipment.
The Sonopuls 490/491 will carry out the so-called self test for approx. 10 seconds.
At the end the buzzer sounds (otherwise see par. 4.4.1.2). It is assumed that when the
selftest is passed all functions of the Sonopuls 490/491 are okay.
Sonopuls 490: Push and hold depressed the two top switches (items ?+ @) at the left
side of the control panel simultaneously, during switching on (see
appendix B, fig. 14)
Sonopuls 491: Push and hold depressed the third and fourth switches (items A+ B) at
the left side of the control panel simultaneously, during switching on (see
appendix B, fig. 15)
Check that no programs or segments fail in the graphic LCD display (otherwise see par.
4.4.1.3).
Check the switches one by one; each time the buzzer sounds (otherwise see par.
4.4.1.5).
Sonopuls 490: Push and hold depressed the second and the third switches from the top
(items @+ A) at the left side of the control panel simultaneously, during
switching on (see appendix B, fig. 14)
Sonopuls 491: Push and hold depressed the fourth and the fifth switches from the top
(items B+ C) at the left side of the control panel simultaneously, during
switching on (see appendix B, fig. 15)
The value which is displayed at the right-bottom side of the display is the software
version (for example: 21, Sonopuls 490), (for example: 02, Sonopuls 491).
Connect an Ultra Sound calibration dummy to the Sonopuls 490/491 unit. Switch on the
unit. The US. output intensity display at the bottom right hand corner will show “C0" as
long as the testing is in process. Wait until the beeper sounds and the display shows
“0". The US. module is tested OK.
When at the end of the test the buzzer sounds and “23" is displayed at the bottom right
hand corner, the US. module is not correct calibrated. The main PC Board must be sent
to the service support department for correct calibration.
Connect a large ( 5 cm²) Ultrasound Treatment Head (UTH) to the us. output socket
(connector CN1, see appendix B, fig. 14). Select US. output mode with a frequency of 1
MHz. Check that the contact indication ring on the UTH. light (otherwise see par.
4.4.1.10). Check that the contact indication ring goes out after approx. 15 sec. (power
save mode)
Put the UTH in the ultrasound dummy load. Ensure that there are no air-bubbles locked
under the treatment surface of the UTH. The intensity display will stop flashing, the
contact indication ring on the UTH will go out, and the timer will start running when the
treatment surface of the UTH is fully under water (otherwise see par. 4.4.1.7).
Note: The ultrasound dummy load must be filled with degassed water to prevent
reflections of the ultrasound beam and to prevent false display readings.
Check that the intensity display on the Sonopuls 490/491 reads 1.5 W/cm² ± 0.40 W/cm²
(otherwise see par. 4.4.1.8) and check that there is acoustical output power (otherwise
see par. 4.4.1.11).
Remove the UTH. from the ultrasound dummy load. The contact indication ring will light
(no acoustical load). Check that the timer will stop running and the output intensity
display will flash.
Use the large ( 5 cm²) Ultrasound Treatment Head from par. 4.3.4.1. Select US. output
mode with a frequency of 1 MHz. Check that the contact indication ring on the UTH. light
(otherwise see par. 4.4.1.10). Check that the contact indication ring goes out after
approx. 15 sec. (power save mode)
Check that the intensity display on the Sonopuls 490/491I reads 3.0 W/cm² ± 0.40 W/cm²
(otherwise see par. 4.4.1.13) and check that there is acoustical output power (otherwise
see par. 4.4.1.11).
Remove the UTH. from the ultrasound dummy load. The contact indication ring will light
(no acoustical load). Check that the timer will stop running and the output intensity
display will flash.
4.3.4.4 Acoustical output power test US. (3.1 MHz and small UTH.)
Repeat this procedure for a frequency of 3.1 MHz. Also check any other available
treatment head as described above.
To check the output currents of the Sonopuls 491 use a load resistor of 500 6 if
requested and connect the electro therapy output to an oscilloscope.
Check that the output signals correspond with figures 2 through 13 at appendix B.

This chapter contains information about the storage and transport of the Sonopuls
490/491 and the storage conditions for the spare parts.
5.1 STORAGE
The Sonopuls 490/491 and any accessories must always be stored in their original
packing.
For the spare parts of the Sonopuls 490/491 the above mentioned requirements also
apply.
5.2 TRANSPORT
The Sonopuls 490/491 and any accessories should always be transported in its original
packing. This packing withstands normal shocks and vibration caused by transport.
During transport and short term storage the temperature should be between - 40 (C and
+ 70 (C. The absolute temperature is not too important, however, rapid fluctuations in
temperature must be avoided.
6 SPARE PARTS
This chapter deals with placing orders for spare parts (refer to appendix A) as well as the
listing of the actual spare parts (appendix A, spare parts list).
6.1 ORDERING
- Part number
- Description
- Quantity
- Shipping details (Incoterms); normal or rapid delivery
The required data is mentioned in appendix A. For the actual spare parts programme
please refer to in the spare parts catalogue which is published every year.
Send your order to your contact person at the sales department of Enraf-Nonius After
receipt of an order you will receive a confirmation. Always check the ordering data.
The procedure for 'normal delivery' is the standard procedure for processing your spare
parts orders. This procedure is suitable for spare parts orders which do not require rapid
delivery such as stock replenishment orders
If you have an agreement with Enraf-Nonius about fixed delivery dates, the spare parts
will be send together with the next delivery unless otherwise agreed.
If spare parts for an urgent customer repair are not on local stock then rapid delivery can
be requested from Enraf-Nonius The DHL-costs will be charged. Note that rapid
delivery is subject to stock availability.
Printed circuit boards are only obtainable as spare part in their latest version. Consult
the technical documentation for instructions of how to modify the latest version of the PC
Board for use in older versions of the apparatus.
Warrantee claims must be provided with the Enraf-Nonius-invoice number and with the
type and serial number of the equipment in question. Enraf-Nonius may ask you to return
the (defective) spare parts.
Defective PC Boards can be offered to Enraf-Nonius for repair. The repair order can be
presented to Enraf-Nonius by means of the "Authorization Request for Return Shipment".
Refer to the return shipment procedure as per par. 6.4.
1. Fill in the "Authorization Request for Return Shipment" form and send this form by fax
to your agent at Enraf-Nonius
2. Within two working days you will receive the form back again by fax. You will then see
that the R(eturn) number has been filled in; this means that your return shipment has
been registered by Enraf-Nonius
3. Note this R(eturn) number on the address label. Pack up the goods together with the
"Authorization Request for Return Shipment" form (or a photo copy).
After the repair order has been carried out the goods will be returned as soon as
possible.
If you have an agreement with Enraf-Nonius about fixed delivery dates, the repaired
goods will be send together with the next delivery.
The spare parts list on the next page shows all available spare parts.
The various columns are explained hereafter:
R1: A number in this column indicates a suggested quantity of spare parts for
users (Quantity of equipment in use: 1 - 3).
Part no.: The part number column shows the code for ordering the part from
Enraf-Nonius.
Description 1: This column gives the general description of the spare part.
Description 2: This column gives the technical specification of the spare part.
