On 5th December, more than 100 countries around the world hold events to mark a special
day which has been celebrated in order to focus attention not only on the importance of
healthy soil but also the sustainable management of soil resources.

Due to the environment necessities, people are asking for help and looking after for the soil
as a natural resource.

H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand looked for a way to help earth and he
was one of the main proponents of the World Soil Day (WSD) and, it is the United Nations
Observance that celebrates healthy soils for a food-secure future.

This celebration has taken off with the support of many countries and authorities around the
world. We are going to have a look to the main purpose on the WSD. We will talk about
soil biodiversity, some “Did you know?” information and, the conservation.

Let’s be ready to enjoy this adventure where we will be able to recognize soil as the most
biologically diverse habitat on earth.

In 2020, the slogan of the World Soil Day campaign is "Keep Soil Alive, Protect Soil
Biodiversity". The campaign aims to raise awareness in society about the importance of
keeping soil healthy, addressing the challenges of soil management and combating
biodiversity loss. The Earth is home to more than two million species, the product of
billions of years of evolution. Most of this biodiversity is in the soil, but so far only 1% of
the species living under our feet have been identified. Each of these creatures plays a key
role in the food chain and contributes to a delicate balance in natural and agricultural
ecosystems.

Soil damage factors

 One third of our global soils are already degraded.
 More than 40 million tons of electronic waste is generated each year.
 Up to a quarter of our household waste is organic, but ends up in landfills.
 Household chemicals end up in soils and as a result of our food.
 One third of plastic produced ends up in our soils.

Main objectives of the "World Soil Day"

 To recognize the economic and social importance of good land management.
Including soil, and in particular its contribution to economic growth.
 To learn about its biological diversity, sustainable agriculture and food security.
 To raise awareness of measures for poverty eradication and women's empowerment.
 Addressing climate change and the increase in water availability and stressing that
desertification, land degradation and drought are problems of global dimension and
continue to pose a serious challenge to development.
 Promote the urgent need at all levels to raise public awareness and promote the
sustainability of limited soil resources through the best available scientific
information and taking into account all dimensions of sustainable development.
