Report on Art Workshop

By: Shiby

17th April, 2021

Art is freedom, being able to bend things most people see as a straight line. Every year, 15 th
of April is celebrated as World Art Day, an international celebration on Fine Arts to
encourage greater awareness of the diversity of artistic expression and to highlight the
contribution of artists to sustainable development. It was truly an obligation as an institution
to ready our students to reinforce the links between artistic creations and the society. Setting
some time aside to step back and see what is right in front of us, an art workshop was
organised at High Range School on 17th April, 2021 to pave way for creativity and curiosity
among students. Having all set the workshop started moving on its wheels by 10:00am
accommodating the students of classes IX to XII. Ms.Shiby, got the ball rolling with her
opening notes followed by the introduction and welcoming of the artist by Abishek of class
XIIA. Pleased to be a part of the High Range family, Artist cum Sculptor, V.K.Jayan kept the
students engaged for the next one hour through his creative and mind blowing artistic
demonstration. Having explained the chemical composition of clay, places where they are
found, their uses and types, the students witnessed the true spirit of craftsmanship as they
stepped into Terra Crafts virtually. Terracotta art seemed to make more sense as students
viewed a team of dedicated artists working with clay, processing and moulding it to
breathtaking products. From earthen wares, planters to sculptures, every single piece of
artistic work at Terra Crafts had a unique and novel touch of creativity. Demonstrations of
pressing system, casting system and coiling system were showcased to arouse interest among
the young. The students were also given hands on experience to coil clay and make a pot out
of it. It was amazing to see the formation of a pot on the traditional potters’ wheel. Clay was
found to have exhibited a totally different meaning in the hands of this great artist cum
sculptor as he highlighted some of his unique works. He made the students realize that clay is
never dirt in one’s hands but definitely an art.

Having explored and travelled through Terra Crafts aided by the artist, we came to a close
with the vote of thanks by Jamaimah of class XB.
