TO COMPARE POINTS OF VIEW

Think, Compare & Share

• Step 1: Teacher/Educator asks a question.


Students think individually to this question and
note their answer.
• Step 2: Students compare their answers in small
group -> Discussion until a consensus in this
small group.
• Step 3: Teacher/Educator notes groups’ answers
on the whiteboard -> plenary discussion.

Buzz groups

• Step 1: Form groups of 4-6 students.


• Step 2: Teacher/Educator asks a question to the
groups. Each group designates a rapporteur.
• Step 3: Each student (in a group( have to give
an answer/solution, then the group agrees on a
common response.
• Step 4: Rapporteurs give the answer of their
group to the whole class, a plenary discussion
can take place.

Aquarium (Fishbowl)

• Step 1: 15 students (max) form a focus group


and the other observe.
• Step 2: Arrange the room into 2 concentric
circles (focus group + observers).
• Step 3: Observer group is silent during focus
group discussion.
• Step 4: A observer can swap places with
someone from the focus group.
• Step 5 (optional): Plenary discussion.

Philips 6/6

• Step 1: Form groups of 6 students with 1


moderator & 1 rapporteur.
• Step 2: Teacher/Educator defines a problem (be
precise). Groups debate during 6 minutes with 3
different times -> round table, critics, synthesis.
• Step 3: Each rapporteur integrates a new group
and shares the ideas of its previous group. A new
rapporteur is nominated…
• Step 4: Teacher/Educator makes the synthesis of
the groups’ discussions.

1 minute paper

• Step 1: Teacher/Educator asks a question about


the lesson.
• Step 2: Individually, students note their answer.
• Step 3: Teacher/Educator collects the papers,
analyses all the answers and adjusts several
misunderstood points during the next session.

Mini quiz

• Step 1: Teacher/Educator prepares MCQ for its


presentation.
• Step 2: Teacher/Educator distributes colored
cardboard (X colors/X different answers)
• Step 3: Students use the cardboard of their
choice to represent their response.
• Step 4: Based on the students’ answers,
Teacher/Educator can clarify points that were
misunderstood by the students.

Brainstorming

• Step 1: Form groups (5-12 students), each


group appoints a president & a secretary.
• Step 2: Teacher/Educator presents the problem.
• Step 3: The president distributes speech, the
secretary lists the different proposals of each
group member.
• Step 4: Each secretary makes a restitution.
• Step 5: Teacher/Educator groups similar
elements and makes connections with the course
notions.

The Puzzles (Jigsaw)

• Step 1: Form different groups of students.


• Step 2: Teacher/Educator asks one different
question to each group.
• Step 3: Group discussion. Each student have to
note the main idea(s) of the group.
• Step 4: Teacher/Educator reorganize the groups
by placing a student of each group into a new
group.
• Step 5: Each student shares the response(s) of
its 1st group -> responses circulation/sum.

Unions

• Step 1: Form group (4-8 students) = Unions.


• Step 2: Each union responds to several questions;
groups do not necessarily have the same work to do.
• Step 3: In the unions, discussion about the results
found by the different members.
• Step 4: Each union presents its answers orally; Other
unions may seek clarification about certain concepts;
the Teacher/Educator corrects and makes connections
with the concepts covered in the course.

3 Times

• Step 1: Students read individually a short text


proposed by the Teacher/Educator and related to the
new topic/concept.
• Step 2: Teacher/Educator presents a “problem
situation” (or several short questions related to the
topic). Students in pairs, have to use the knowledge
disseminated into the text.
• Step 3: Polling -> 4-5 students. Teacher/Educator
encourages debate from student interventions.
Synthesis made by the Teacher/Educator -> can add a
complement of knowledge or analysis necessary for
learning the new concept.
