Record- For Tch and Lrn 420 we had to complete a pre-referral activity where we recorded the

behaviors taking place and what we think would be beneficial to help the student. My scenario
was based on a student named Ellie who was struggling with reading comprehension,
frustration and avoidance tactics with schoolwork. After recording Ellies struggles objectively I
wrote a reflection summing everything up before I would share it with other school staff
members as I would need to if I had done one in real life. This semester for Tch and Lrn 385 we
created a lesson plan based around teaching students about a specific children’s right and what
that looks like in real life for them here in our community. For this assignment we focused on
the children’s right of being able to meet with other young people and join groups, leading us
to focus on different organizations in the community that students can join and various
resources that students can learn more about and participate in. For this assignment we would
divide students into small groups where they would then be assigned one organization to
research and gather information about. After each group is done, they would participate in a
gallery walk where each student would have a sheet with room to fill in information on each
organization.
Reflect- Looking back on this assignment for Tch and Lrn 420 it taught me a lot about how to
look at a situation objectively to get to the root issue and find ways to resolve it. By identifying
what Ellie was struggling with and reading instances that had taken place I was able to
brainstorm ideas of things that might help her improve in reading and in turn resolve some
behavior issues like avoidance and frustration while completing schoolwork. To improve my
pre-referral, I could have been more specific with what exactly Ellie would do to show her
frustration and what she would do to avoid doing her work. By including these details, I could
have recorded more information that would have been beneficial in finding a solution for her
struggles. Looking back on the lesson plan for Tch and Lrn 385, I wish that we had included
opportunities for guests to come into the classroom to share about their organizations. To
make this lesson more relevant for ELL students I could include a local resource that works with
ELL students and have a group research that organization.
Analyze- The 420 Prereferral Activity demonstrates how I am able to objectively record
information and then communicate it to others to best support all learners. Even though this
activity was done based on reading scores and behavioral problems, the solutions to the
struggles Ellie was experiencing show how I am able to think outside of the box and draw on
information learned in class to help students in any way possible. With this information I was
then able to summarize what the problem was, what to try going forward and how to add to
her current plan to bet support her academic journey. For ELL students, the same can be done
but with identifying what they are struggling with depending on their English Proficiency level
and then supports can be provided once their struggles are identified. The Tch and Lrn 385
lesson plan demonstrates how I am able to connect students to organizations and resources
within the community. Even though these are not directly connected to ELL community
resources in this lesson plan, this lesson plan still shows how I am able to connect students to
them. Each of these assignments connect to collaborating with various stakeholders for the
overall success and support of ELL students because they prepare information to be given to
stakeholders or they share information with students about community partners that could
benefit students.
Act- Going forward it is crucial that I continue to work on how to be objective about situations
and record information without a bias so that a true solution can be reached through
appropriate interventions and supports through collaboration with others.
