Record- In Tch and Lrn 413 we completed an activity where we had to identify language

demands within a lesson and how we would help students with these demands to set them up
for success during the lesson. In this lesson we really analyzed what would be expected of
students in terms of vocabulary, syntax and discourse and created scaffolding to help ELL
students to still be successful and able to participate in the lesson. For example, for this SEL
lesson, students will need to be able to participate in a whole group discussion so that means to
include everyone we will have students draw quick pictures to share with the group, I will draw
pictures on the board to help explain what I have written on the list and giving students
vocabulary support in their first language. In Tch and Lrn 322 we created writing and reading
lesson plans to use with our future students. To be able to use these lessons, I will need to
make some adaptations for ELL students of varying proficiency levels so that they can fully
benefit from the lesson and elaborate on my plan on how to include them. One idea I had for
the reading comprehension lesson plan was to have ELL students use a translator app on a
computer or a tablet that would translate the entire story or would help them to communicate
with their classmates. Better yet I wrote how I could find it in their own native language so that
they can have both texts in front of them to reference whenever they need to. These lesson
plans each include different aspects that differentiate instruction for students like working in
pairs, visual charts like a phrase bank and all group sharing.
Reflect- Each of these assignments showed me more about how to think about all learners that
will be in my future classroom. Specifically, the 413 identifying language demands with a
previous lesson was all based around how to make a lesson inclusive for students of all English
proficiency levels in your classroom or that you might have in the future. The 322 lesson plans
were more of a good jumping off point of how to support ELL students in the classroom and
should be elaborated on before fully being used in the classroom. For the writing lesson
students could also be given a written set of instructions in their native language so that they
can always have something to reference and compare the English version to.
Analyze- Looking back on my two 322 lesson plans, we had a very limited opportunity to
include ELL students into our planning and I should have gone more in depth with being an ELL
endorsement, even though it was not a requirement. It is important for me to prepare to teach
all learners, not just a small group of students or assume that all students will be at an English
Proficiency level where they will be able to participate in the lesson without any additional
supports. With the 413 assignment, I was able to really dive into what specifically might
challenge an ELL student at varying English proficiency levels and come up with potential
supports or prior knowledge that the student would need to be successful in the lesson. If a
student was at a Proficiency Level 1, I would need to provide more intense supports like
translated texts or high frequency vocabulary words, lots of hand gestures, visuals and
sentences stems/starters. For ELL students who are more in the middle at an English
Proficiency Level 3 things like think-pair-share, conversational role play with polite or formal
language (interviewing, resolving conflict, step by step instructions) and making
connections/guiding connections with students could all be helpful supports during a lesson.
With a student who is at a proficiency 5 then translated texts or words may not be as crucial
while gestures and visuals are still very relevant and useful for all learners.
Act- For any lesson that I plan out going forward, it is crucial that I analyze what might be road
blocks for ELL students and come up with supports to offer for students in order for them to
fully participate and get the most that they can out of it. In order to successfully teach ELL
students, I will need to be mindful of what all a lesson expects of them so that I can fully
provide supports for all students.
