METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter presents the type of study, respondents of the study, sampling

technique, instruments used in gathering the data and the treatment of the data.

Methods and Techniques of the Study

This study utilized the descriptive survey type of research. Ac Calderon and

Gonzales (1993; 62) stated that descriptive studies are purposive process of gathering,

analyzing, classifying and tabulating data about the prevailing condition process,

practices, trends and causes efffect relationship about such data with or without the aid of

statistical method. Mouly (1987:236) also pointed out that survey is a gathering data

from a relatively large number of cases at a particular time mainly through the use of the

questionnaire is more realistic than the experiment because it presents phenomenon in its

natural setting.

The task of this study is to asses the teacher’s evaluation on the academic deans

performance in terms of leadership, administration, faculty and program development,

ethics and fairness, communication, relationship with faculty and how it contributes to

their management control. This study also wants to determine if there are significant

relationships among the criteria present in the teacher’s evaluation of deans and the

significant differences in the performance of deans as evaluated by the teachers.

Population and Sample of the Study

This study was confined to the different colleges of Bulacan State University

Table 1 shows the number of respondents involved in the study.

The table reflects that there are 13 respondents in College A, 38 respondents in

College B, 19 repondents in College C, 7 respondents in College D, 30 respondents in

College E, 52 respondents in College F, 47 respondents in College G, 75 respondents in

College H, 29 respondents in College I, 25 respondents in College J, 17 respondents in

College K, 52 respondents in College L, and 55 respondents in College M in Bulacan

State University.

Research Instrument

The major instrument used in gathering the data in order to answer the specific

problems presented to this research was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to

ensure the regularity of information. The questionnaire collects data in an organized or

structured way. Documentray materials were also used to supplement the data gathered

through the questionnaire.

Survey Questionnaire

One set of questionnaire was constructed for the purpose of the study. It consists

of two parts. The first part aims to assess the academic deans performance with respect to

the following categories: leadership, administration, faculty and program development,

ethics and fairness, communication, relationship with faculty, Part II dealt with

respondent’s information.

Documentary Materials

The researcher availed some of the books, journals, periodicals, unpublished

theses and dissertations that are considered helpful to the study. As such, they would

substantiate some of the findings of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data for this study were gathered and supplied by their professor. The

researchers only tabulated and interpreted these data.

Data Processing and Statistical Treatment

The data gathered through the questionnaire were classified, organized, tallied and

tabulated. These were treated with the use of frequency distribution, weighted mean,

Pearson R Correlation and F-test. Data to answer specific problems were treated as

follows:

1. In assesing the academic deans performance in terms of the following:

leadership, administration, faculty and program development, ethics and fairness,

communication, relationship with faculty, frequency distribution and average were used.

The following rating scale with the corresponding point of value was used.

5 (4.50 – 5.00) – Outstanding

4 (3.50 – 4.49) – Very Satisfactory

3 (2.50 – 3.49) -Satisfactory

2 (1.50 -.2.49) –Fair

1 (0 -1.49) – Needs Improvement

2. In testing the alternative hypothesis on the extent of significant relationships

among the criteria present in the teacher’s evaluation of deans and significant differences

in the performance of deans as evaluated by the teachers, Pearson r coefficient of

correlation was used.
