Problem Identified

THEME:DESIGN THINKING FOR CLEAN ENVIRONMENT AND SMART CITIES

TITLE: SMART PARKING SYSTEM

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED:

Over half of humankind, about 4.000 million people lives nowadays in cities. On 2030
this figure will raise to 60%. Cities have a big mobility, energetic and pollution problem that lowers live
quality. Approx 35% travel during rush hours looking for free parking spots that are hard to find. That’s
why parking is very important to regulate vehicle’s flow and reduce atmospheric pollution. Car parking is a
major problem in urban areas in both developed and developing countries. Following the rapid incense of
car ownership, many cities are suffering from lacking of car parking areas with imbalance between parking
supply and demand which can be considered the initial reason for metropolis parking problems.

Shortage of parking space, high parking tariffs, and traffic congestion due to visitors in
search for a parking place are only a few examples of everyday parking problems.  In cities pedestrians too
are facing problems due to the parking problems. Time has come when a smarter approach should be
designed to get rid of this parking problem.

END USER/CUSTOMER OF YOUR SOLUTION:

Fishing for a parking space is a routine activity and it is estimated that nearly 30% of
urban congestion is created by drivers cruising for parking space, according to ITS America’s
Market Analysis. Also resulting in oil wastage, almost one million barrels of world’s oil every day.
This ever growing traffic congestion and uncertainty in the parking availability and payment have
thus enforced the need for a Smart Parking systems. A Smart parking technology that will help
optimize parking space usage, improve the efficiency of the parking operations and help
smoother traffic flow.

Smart Parking solutions are designed to provide drivers an ultimate solution on their journey
from the beginning to end without searching for parking, cost, travel time etc. This advantage
comes by paying marginal fees to the smart parking service providers.

PROPOSED SOLUTION:

Smart parking development implies an IoT-based system that sends data

about free and occupied parking places via web/mobile application. The IoT-
device, including sensors and microcontrollers, is located in each parking place.
The user receives a live update about the availability of all parking places and
chooses the best one.

In order to investigate technologies behind the smart parking solution, we

implemented an internal research project. The main idea was the creation of
smart parking using the Internet of Things and ultrasonic sensors, where
available parking places could be displayed in a web application.

Benefits analysis of Smart Parking Technology

2. Reduced traffic
3. Reduced pollution
4. Enhanced User Experience
5. Integrated Payments and POS
6. Increased Safety
7. Real-Time Data and Trend Insight
8. Decreased Management Costs
9. Increased Service and Brand Image
