What is National Hero?

National hero is something differently defined between different people. Many times, the ideal
national hero is thought of as someone that must do some extravagant deeds to be labeled and
considered as a national hero. Some hero has the immense amounts of courage, intelligence and
strong will power and others think a national hero is to be respected and a good leader.

In our country, Philippines, the reformist writer Dr. Jose P. Rizal was generally considered the
greatest Filipino hero and often given as the Philippine National Hero even though he has never
been proclaimed by the Philippine national government. However, the reformist and doctor Jose
Rizal passed the criterium as the country’s National hero by National Commission for Culture and
Arts.

The criteria cultivated was established with a purpose to support a structured decision-making
process and ensured that decisions make support the desired outcomes. If I were to add criterium
to considered someone an individual as a national hero I will categorize it into three categories.
Identity, work of literature and movements. For identity the candidate must be 20% of Filipino
blood. The candidate must be keenly examined his/her true background in that way we can
considered him/her a true born national hero of our own country. Second category is the work of
literature national hero must not only consider the impact of his/her movement. He/ She was able
to impart knowledge for the love for the country with the use of poem or writing or songs. And
last is the movement, nationalism without action is not considered someone a nationalist. The
candidate has a scope of there movements. If it is barangay, provincial, regional or national
movement. And the vision of their movements wherein their fighting for freedom of themselves,
people within the community or our country or against Foreigner conqueror.
