Instructions: 1. Indian Standard codes ( IS 456 , IS 3370 Par 2 and Part 4, IRC 6, IRC 112,
IS 6533 Part 2, IS 875 Part 1 and Part 3, IS 800 and steel tables are permitted)
2. Assume any relevant data
Time: 3 Hours Answer ALL Questions Max. Marks 100
PART- A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. Differentiate between allowable stress design and limit state design.

2. When should a building be designed for wind loads?
3. Give the maximum pitch between any two adjacent rivets.
4. Give the types of joints adopted between walls and floor of a reinforced concrete water
tank.
5. What is the minimum thickness of plates in the lower cylindrical courses of steel water
tanks with suspended bottoms?
6. IRC Class B loading is adopted for which type of structure?
7. How are the retaining walls classified based on their mode of resisting earth pressure?
8. What is passive earth pressure?
9. Draw a Queen post truss.
10. Give the classification of steel chimneys based on the type of construction of the steel
stacks.

PART- B (5 x 16 = 80 Marks)
(Q. No 11 is Compulsory)

11. A self-supporting steel stack of height 72 m above the foundation is located in

Chennai. The diameter of the cylindrical part of the chimney is 3m. The thickness of
the fire brick work lining is 100mm, and the lining is supported by the stack throughout
the height. The entire chimney is divided into sections of 8m height for design
calculations. Determine the moment due to wind pressure at a height of 48m. Also
design the thickness of the steel plate at that height.
12. a) Two plates 16 mm thick are joined by double cover butt joint. Assuming cover plates
of 8 mm thickness, design the joint to transmit a factored design load of 500 kN.
Assume Fe410 plate, grade of bolts 4.6 and bolt diameter as 20 mm. Draw the joint
details.
OR
b) (i)A 100mmx10mm plate is to be welded to another plate 150mm x10mm by fillet (8)
welding on three sides. The size of the weld is 6mm. Find out the necessary
overlap of the plate, for full strength of the joint. Take the allowable tensile
stress in plate equal to 150 N/mm2 and allowable stress in weld as 110 N/mm2.
(ii)A tie bar 120 mmx10 mm is to be connected to other of size 120 mmx14 mm. (8)
If the tie bars are to be loaded by a pull of 160 kN, find out the size of end
fillets such that the stresses in both the end fillets are the same. Take
permissible stress in weld = 110N/mm2.
13. a) An elevated cylindrical steel tank with hemispherical bottom whose capacity is
1,60,000 litres. The tank has a conical roof. The ring beam of the tank is at height of
10 m from the ground level. The tank is to be built at Chennai. Determine (i) the
diameter and height of cylindrical portion (ii) The thickness of plates used in
cylindrical and hemispherical portion and (iii) Design the joints of the tank in the
cylindrical portion. Take fy = 250 N/mm2.

OR
b) Design the wall of a RC circular water tank to store 4,50,000 liters of water. The
wall is fixed at the base and free at the top and is resting on the ground. The depth
of storage is to be 3.5m and free board is 250 mm. Use M30 concrete and Fe415
steel. Draw the reinforcement details of the wall.

14. a) Design the cross girders of RC T-beam girder bridge to suit the following data: for a
clear width of roadway =7.5 m , span (c/c of bearings) =16 m, live load: IRC class
AA tracked vehicle , average thickness of wearing coat is 80 mm . The longitudinal
girders and cross girders are spaced at 2.5 m and 4 m centre to centre respectively.
Use M25 grade of concrete and Fe415 grade HYSD bars.

OR

b) Design a RC slab culvert for a two lane national highway using the loading
conditions of IRC Class A wheeled vehicle to suit the following data. Road width is
7.5 mm, foot paths on either side (95 cm wide) clear span = 6 m, wearing coat =
75 mm, width of bearing =0.5 m. Assume M25 grade of concrete and Fe415 grade
HYSD bars.

15. a) Estimate the preliminary dimensions of a counterfort retaining wall to retain 7 m high
embankment above ground level. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 180 kN/m 2.
The top of earth retained is horizontal behind the wall and the unit weight of soil is
18 kN/m3 with angle of internal friction as 33°. The coefficient of friction between soil
and concrete is taken as 0.5. Spacing of counterforts is 3 m c/c. Use M20 grade of
concrete and Fe415 grade HYSD bars. Estimate and check the stability of the wall.

OR

b) A T -shaped cantilever retaining wall is to retain an earth embankment 3 m

above the ground level. The embankment is horizontal at its top. The safe bearing
capacity of soil is 100 kN/m2. Density of earth is 18 kN/m3, Angle of internal friction is
30°.The coefficient of friction between soil and concrete is 0.5. Use M20 grade of
concrete and Fe415 grade HYSD bars. Estimate the preliminary dimensions and
design the stem of the cantilever retaining wall.
