1. Differentiate the concept of Production Management and Operations Management?
A high level comparison which distinct production and operations management can be done on
following characteristics:
Output: Production management deals with manufacturing of products like (computer, car, etc)
while operations management cover both products and services.
Usage of Output: Products like computer/car are utilized over a period of time whereas services
need to be consumed immediately
Classification of work: To produce products like computer/car more of capital equipment and less
labour are required while services require more labour and lesser capital equipment.
Customer Contact: There is no participation of customer during production whereas for services a
constant contact with customer is required.
3. What is the importance of POM in your life as an MBA student? In your workplace?
I believe it is safe to say that all businesses need operations and production management in order to
function. Also, operation and production are of course essential parts of running any business, and it’s worth
noting that obtaining skills in these areas can make me a great manager someday.
As an MBA student, POM is important to me because production and operations management skills can be
applied across all industries. In banking and finance, in which I am included, production and operations
management skills are necessary in order to move large sums of money and construct financial deals.
