Morning routine: at 5:15am my alarm clock goes off. Then, I take a shower, get dressed and
go to the kitchen to make my breakfast and my essential cup of coffee. At 7:30 I’m ready to
take report. I exchange the turn with the night nurses and once the report is finished, I walk
around to say hello to all the patients, at 7:50am and I’m signed onto a computer, reviewing
doctor’s notes, reviewing orders I need to execute. During the day I make constant rounds to
check there isn’t any emergency. At 3pm and I return from lunch. At 6:00 I say hello to the
night nurses and give report to them. Then I take the bus to go home and relax after a long but
successful day. Before going to bed, I make a list of the things I must do the next day so I
don’t forget anything.

When I’m in writing mode for a novel, I get up at 4:00 am and work for five to six hours. In the
afternoon, I run for 10km or swim for 1500m (or do both), then I read a bit and listen to some
music. I go to bed at 9:00 pm. I keep to this routine every day without variation. The repetition
itself becomes the important thing; it’s a form of mesmerism. I mesmerize myself to reach a
deeper state of mind. But to hold to such repetition for so long — six months to a year —
requires a good amount of mental and physical strength. In that sense, writing a long novel is
like survival training. Physical strength is as necessary as artistic sensitivity
