METHOD of ASSESSMENT
• All the assessments conduct as following:
1)COURSEWORK: 50%
All the courseworks will be conducted in the
tutorial class.
• Quiz 10% [Wk-4(S)/ 6(L)]
(i. Writing Kana Test: Students are to convert
60 Romanized letters to Hiragana / Katakana.
ii. Spelling test: Listen 10 vocabularies to the
tutor and write in the correct answer. )
• Midterm test 15% [Wk-5(S)/9(L)]
( Writing grammar test for Chapter 1- 3)
• Group Assignment 25% [Wk-6(S)/12(L)]
This is group presentation. Each group should
consists of 4 to 6 students.
Explain the coursework contents and formats in
detail by the tutorial teacher in Wk-3.
2) FINAL EXAMINATION : 50%

A) JAPANESE SCRIPT
There are 3 kinds of letters in Japanese(refer
to slide-8)
1) HIRAGANA ひらがな
2) KATAKANA カタカナ
3) KANJI 漢字 (かんじ)
Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic
symbols, each representing one syllable.
Learn the Japanese syllabaries as the first
step for reading and writing.
HIRAGANA ひらがな
Used for writing words that are of Japanese
origin (native Japanese words) .
Used to write particles and the grammatical
endings of verbs and adjectives.

with raw fish

にほん(nihon, 日本) Japan

* Katakanaカタカナ is fundamentally
the same as Hiragana ひらがな
Names of places :

KANJI 漢字(かんじ)
KANJI is taken from Chinese characters
used to simplify a word so that you don‟t
have to spell it at all.
Commonly used in Japanese writing.
It makes reading simpler and understand
easier.

2. Dakuon 浊音
Following there are the voiced
consonant sounds.
* The different is that there are 2 slashes
at the upper right of each “K, S, T & H”
row kana.
** So „ka‟ become „ga‟, „sa‟ become
„za‟, „ta‟ becomes „da‟…

3. Handakuon 半浊音
- The “ H ”row sound kana have 2
different voice marks, one for a „b‟
sound and the other for a „p‟ sound.
- The different is that there are a small circle
“ “ at the upper right of H row kana.

5. Notebook = ノート(nooto)
6. Sokuon 促音
•the small „tsu„(っ)symbol.
① にっき(nikki) = diary
② ざっし(zasshi) = magazine
③ ベッド (beddo) = bed
④ カップ(kappu)= cup
⑤ ロボット(robotto) = robot
The pronunciation of Sokuon need to be careful
, it will affect the writing and meaning.
