AIRCRAFT AIR-CONDITIONINING SYSTEM

A340
The A340 is fitted with two air-conditioning packs housed in the belly fairing just forward of the landing
gear. Bay let us look at how a pack works hot bleed air enters the pack through a pack flow control valve
its function is to change the flow rate through the pack.

The air is then cooled and conditioned after passing through several stages in the pack heat exchangers
and air cycle machine. Sub-zero temperatures can be achieved because of the output.

Two of the phases are heat exchangers, which use flowing ambient air to cool the hot bleed air. This flow
of air comes through the ram air inlet flap and exits through the ram air outlet flap. A temperature control
valve is installed, which can alter the pack outlet temperature by adding uncooled air to the turbine outlet
flow. A pack controller controls the flow rate and temperature of the pack flow control valve and the
temperature control valve.
The two air conditioning packs deliver cool, conditioned air automatically and separately. The conditioned
air from the packs is then supplied to a mixing unit, and in the event that both packs fail, an emergency air
supply is supplied through a ram air valve to ventilate the cockpit and cabin or to eliminate smoke. ECAM
monitors various pack parameters, including pack flow compressor. Monitors various pack parameters,
including pack flow compressor.

The outlet temperature, temperature control valve position, and pack outlet temperature are shown on the
upper portion of the ECAM bleed page, along with the valve positions.

A zone controller monitors the temperature of the four zones and sends signals to the pack controllers to
set the air temperature produced by the packs. Colbert is traditionally shipped by the packs and then
distributed to the four zones, as different sections of the aircraft may require different levels of cooling or
heating. Trim air valves may be used to add hot bleed air to achieve the desired result. The zone controls
the valves that regulate the zone's desired temperature.
A hot-air cross valve is also installed, which automatically opens when the hot air supply fails. The zone
controller monitors the trim air system, hot air system, zone duct temperature, and zone temperature, as
well as all of the system valves.
