EXTRA QUESTIONS:
1. Write a short note on the painting discovered at Bhimbetka.
Ans. The cave paintings at Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh have been an important source of
information about the prehistoric era. These caves are named after 'Bhima", one of the five
Pandavas of Mahabharata. Various community activities such as birth, burial, dancing, and
hunting, playing and cooking food have been depicted in the paintings. Wild animals like
buffalo, tigers, bisons have been found in the paintings. White pigments, natural red, green and
yellow are the common colours of the paintings. The colours were made using powdered rock,
along with water and other sticky substances, such as resins from the trees.
2. What are sites?
Ans. Sites refer to places where the remains of buildings, utensils, and other artefacts are found.
These materials were used by the people in the past. The archaeologists either find these on the
surface of the earth or buried under the earth.
3. What are habitations – cum – factory sites?
Ans: Habitation - cum - factory sites are the places where blocks of stones, tools that were made
and perhaps discarded because they were not perfect, and chips of waste stone were left behind.
It is believed that, sometimes, people lived here for longer spells of time.
4. Hunter-gatherers used stone tools. Explain what these tools were used for? Give reasons.
Ans: Stone tools were used:
 To cut meat & bone.
 Scrape bark (from trees) & hides (animal skins).
 Chop fruit & roots.
 Some stones may have been attached to handles of bone or wood, to make spears & arrows
for hunting.
 To chop wood for firewood.
 To dig the ground to collect edible roots.
 Stitching clothes made out of animal skin.

5. What are habitation sites? Why did people choose them? Give examples.
Ans: Habitation sites were places where people lived. These include caves and rock shelters.
People chose these natural caves because they provided shelter from the rain, heat and wind. E.g.
Bhimbetka (in present Madhya Pradesh), Chirand (in present Bihar).
