Evaluate Narratives Based on How the Author Developed the Setting and
Characters
At the end of this lesson, it is expected that you learned to:
1. Enumerate characters in the story;
2. Identify the setting in the story;
3. Explain narratives based on how the author developed the setting and
characters.
Setting and Characters
The Setting of the story refers to the geographic location (places or scene) and time
within a narrative. Characters in the story refer to the persons or animals around which
the story revolves.
The Setting makes the story vivid and interesting. Usually, the setting is not said
directly, instead, clues are given for the readers to infer. In some stories, however, the
setting can change. Time may not be described directly and can move back and forth. The
place where the scene is happening can be change abruptly.

While Characters in the story refers to the persons, animals, beings, creatures, or
things around which the story revolves. Writers are use characters to perform the action
and speak dialogue, moving the story along a plotline. Characters are also an important
element in narratives.
There are some traits of the characters in a story are shown in various ways:
1. Through the author’s use of descriptive words about the characters.
2. By the actions of the characters themselves.
3. By the words coming from the other characters or the narrator in the story.
Activity 1: Identify the proper noun in the following sentences. Write your answers
on a piece of paper.
________ 1. Ryan went to the market.
________ 2. The latest I phones were missing.
________ 3. The group of girls was having fun in Center Plaza Mall.
________ 4. Mrs. Reyes cared for the babies throughout the day.
________ 5. He likes to go swimming in Puntabelle.
________ 6. Mary Anne got a rash and an allergy.

________ 8. There were dolphins and sea lions at Ocean Adventure
________ 9. My classmates are living in Springfield Subdivision.
________ 10. Mimi’s height and talent helped her to win the contest.
Activity 2: Solve each problem. Write the corresponding letter from the answer
you’ve got in a piece of paper. This will form words that we will be learning today.
Let’s Try This. Read and understand. Let’s identify the setting of the story and let’s
find who are the characters in the given story below.
Shela was alone at home when the doorbell rang. Jumping up from her seat
she ran to open the door. “Have you tried this brand of coffee before?” asked the
stranger. Shela was frightened. She was actually expecting her mother at the door.
“Whenever a good child dies, an angel of God comes down from heaven, takes the
dead child in his arms, and flies with him over all the places the child had loved during
his life. Then he gathers a handful flowers, which he carries up to the Almighty that they
bloom more brightly in heaven than they do on earth. And God presses the flowers to His
heart, but He kisses the flower that pleases Him best, and it receives a voice, and is able
to join the song of the chorus of bliss.” 5 The flower grew beautifully, rose-bush, but some
wicked hand had broken thestem. The dead child said, “That was so pitiful! Let us take it
to heaven in God’s garden so that it will grow there.” The angel took up the rose-bush;
then he kissed the child, and the little one half opened eyes. The angel picked also some
beautiful flowers, as well as a few humble buttercups and heart’s-ease. "Now we have
more flowers," said the child; the angel only nodded and he did not fly upward to heaven.
It was quite still in the middle of night in this great town. They remained still and
the angel came over a small, narrow street. There are dirty plates, pieces of plaster, rags,
old hats, and other things that is not good to see. In all this confusion, the angel pointed
to the pieces of a broken flower-pot. The earth had been kept from falling flower-pot and
to a lump of earth which had fallen out of it. The earth had been kept from falling to
pieces by the roots of a withered field-flower, which had been thrown by the rubbish. The
angel said, “We will take this with us, I will tell you why as we fly.” And as they flew the
angel started to tell a story. "Down in that narrow alley, in a low cellar, lived a poor sick
boy; he had been troubled from his childhood, and even in his best days he could just
manage walk up and down the room on crutches once or twice, but no more. Some days
in summer, the sunbeams would lie on the floor of the cellar for about half an hour. In
this spot the poor sick boy would sit and warming himself in the sunshine.
Then he would say he had been out; they knew nothing of the green forest in its
spring verdure, till a neighbor’s son brought him a green bough from a beech-tree. This he
would place over his head, and fancy that he was in the beech-wood while sun shone, and
birds caroled gayly. One day the neighbor’s boy brought him some field-flowers, and
among them was one to which the root still adhered. This he carefully planted by a
fortunate hand, for it grew, put forth fresh shoots, and blossomed every year. It became a
splendid flower-garden to the sick boy, and his little treasure upon earth. He watered it,
and cherished it, and took care of it. It should have the benefit of every sunbeam that
found its way into the cellar, from the earliest morning ray to the evening sunset.
The flower entwined itself even in his dreams, for him it bloomed, for him it spread
its perfume. And it gladdened his eyes and to the flower he turned, when the Lord called
him. He has been one year with God. The flower has stood in the window, withered and
forgotten. Even this flower, withered and faded as it is, it gave more real joy than the most
beautiful flower in the Queen’s garden,” "But why do you know this?" he asked. "I knew it,
because I ‘am the sick little boy and I know my own flower very well," said the Angel. Then
the child opened his eyes and looked into the glorious happy face of the angel, and at the
same moment they found themselves in God's Heaven where all is happiness and joy. The
Almighty pressed the child to His chest, and he received white wings, so they can fly
together with the angels, hand in hand. After that, God pressed all the flowers to His
heart, but He kissed the poor withered flower. All were supremely happy and they all
graciously sang, the God blessed child and the withered field flower that had lain so long
in the rubbish heap in the narrow, dark alley.
Activity 3

Due to the New Normal situation brought by the pandemic, we commonly hear the
words social distancing or physical distancing. This means we keep a distance of at least
1 meter from each other and avoid spending time in crowded places or in group, aside
from wearing face mask, face shield and washing hands, the minimum safety protocol
standards imposed by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to limit the speed of spread of
covid-19 transmission.
The units of measurement of distance are kilometer (km), meter (m), centimeter (cm),
millimeter (mm).
The units of measurement of time are hour (h), minute (min), second (sec).
The units of measurement of speed are kilometer per hour (km/h), minute per second
(min/sec), centimeter per second (cm/sec), millimeter per second (mm/sec).

Filipinos are fond of traveling out of town and out of the country but for the
meantime, let us enjoy our home-life and recall the places we have traveled before
this pandemic.
What is the most faraway place you have been to? Do you know how far is it?
How long did you travel? Do you know the speed at which your vehicle traveled?
Have you noticed that when the speed of the vehicle is faster, the time it takes to
reach a place is lessened?

Speedometer or speed meter is an instrument on a vehicle’s dashboard indicating

its speed.
Let’s have the meaning of speed, distance, and time.
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is moving”. Speed
can be thought of as rate by which an object covers distance.
Example 55 km/h
Distance is the total length between two positions.
Example (Distance of Bulacan to Baguio) kilometers
Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an action,
process, or condition exists or continues.

Halina at sabaysabay
natin itong talakayin

Taon man ang bilangin, di masasayang mandin

Aking ipagmamalaki gawang Pilipino magpakailanman.

Gawain A. Sagutin ang mga tanong:

1. Tungkol saan ang tula?
_______________________________________________________________________________________

maipagmamalaki kanino man.
makatwiran, mahalaga at kapakipakinabang.
____5. Laging isiping ikaw lang ang tama.

A wide variety of software applications are available to meet the society’s need to
perform tasks easier and faster. With the help of this innovation, information can now be
analyzed and communicated effectively in a more convenient way.
Microsoft Excel is one of the most widely used electronic spreadsheet application by
individual and businesses. It contains rows and columns which enables you to sort,
arrange and calculate numerical data easily.

Functions- are calculations that return a result. To create and enter functions always
start with an equal sign (=). Without it, Excel will not calculate a result. The inputs in
functions are called arguments. Functions must be written correctly in a specific way
called syntax. The syntax for a function starts with the equal sign (=), followed by the
function name(SUM for example), and one or more arguments. Arguments can be in a
form of numbers, cell references, or texts. It refers to both individual cells and cell ranges
and must be enclosed within a parentheses. It contains the information you want to
calculate.

The function in the example below would add the values of the cell range A1 to A5.

Excel has the most common functions you may use:

SUM - adds all the values in the selected cell range.
AVERAGE – calculates the sum of the cells and divides by the number of cells
in the argument.
COUNTA – count items in a cell range.
MAX – determines the highest cell value in the argument.

In the example below, the AVERAGE function is used to calculate the

average amount spend for a week.
These are the following methods to create formula using functions in Excel
1. Encode the data needed to calculate the average.
5. You may also use the mouse to select the cell range in which the function
will be applied. Once the syntax is typed in the formula bar, click check
before the function icon or simply press enter.
6. The answer to the Function is shown in the cell. In this example, the result of
the average is on cell B9.

Formulas, on the other hand, are combinations of functions, operands, and

operations. These are used like when you are manually calculating.
Using spreadsheet serves different purposes in almost every profession. These
include the following:
Spreadsheets are used as calculators to automatically calculate the values
entered.
Spreadsheets are used as tables to track personal investments, expenses,
inventory, address, and telephone numbers, among others.
Spreadsheets are used to graph, analyze, and store information.
Excel uses symbols for mathematical operators for formula, such as
+ plus sign for addition
- minus sign for subtraction
* asterisk for multiplication
/ forward slash for division
Learning Task 1: Write TRUE on the space provided if the statement is correct
and FALSE if it is not.
________1. There are only four functions in MS Excel.
________2. Functions are combinations of functions, operands and operators.
________3. Formulas always start with an equal sign.
________4. Without an equal sign, Excel will not calculate a result.
________5. Average is used to add two or more numbers together.

Learning Task 2: Arrange the jumbled letters to form a word. Use the clue
