5
History

The company was founded in 1862 by Göran Fredrik Göransson, who was first in
the world to succeed in using the Bessemer method for steel production on an industrial scale.
At an early stage, operations focused on high quality and added value, investments in R&D,
close contact with customers, and exports. This is a strategy that has remained unchanged
through the years.
As early as the 1860s, the product range included drill steel for rock-drilling. The
company's listing on the Stockholm Stock Exchange took place in 1901. The manufacturing
of stainless steel began in 1921 and cemented carbide in 1942. Production of cemented-
carbide tools began in the 1950s in Gimo, Sweden.
In 1972, the company name was changed to Sandvik AB, and in 1984, a new type of
organization was introduced, with a parent company and separate business areas.
The company has continuously developed its offerings, including new technologies. In
addition to organic growth, Sandvik's expansion has also involved a series of company
acquisitions over the years. One example is Tamrock, the Finnish manufacturer of rock-
excavation machinery.

Today, Sandvik's operations are concentrated on the following core areas:

• Tools and tooling systems for industrial metal cutting
• Equipment and tools, service and technical solutions for the mining and construction
industries
• Advanced stainless steels and special alloys as well as products for industrial heating

6
Management system

They hold approvals to several management systems, such as ISO 9001. Most of their

Production process

Rock drill steel

Sandvik's rolling mill for rock drill steel for the manufacturing of top-hammer rock drill rods
is the most up-to-date in the world. This unique mill is fully automated and designed
specifically for manufacturing this one product.

After rolling in the billet mill, the rods are turned to avoid decarburization in the final rolling
process. A long, straight center hole is drilled in the drill steel blank and a core is inserted in
the hole before heating the blank. The blanks are hot-rolled into round or hexagon-shaped
drill steel.

A carefully controlled cooling process after rolling guarantees uniform mechanical

properties. The core is removed and, after the finishing operations, the drill steel is ready for
shipment.

The size range is from 19 mm (0.748 in.) hexagon (width across flats) to outside diameter
(OD) 60 mm (2.362 in.) round.

Straightening

The hollow drill steel is straightened after rolling in a roller straightening machine.

Cutting

Cutting of random lengths or cutting into fixed lengths. The hollow drill steel is free
from burrs.

Oiling and plugging

On customer request, hollow drill steel, especially for overseas markets, is oiled and
the holes are plugged as a means of corrosion protection.

Bundling and marking

The hollow drill steel is bundled and each bundle is identified by tagging. The marking
is normally a standard marking, but can also be made according to customer request.

Quality inspection

Sandvik's hollow drill steel is tested according to customers' specifications.
