Q1. For the planar system of three bars shown in figure 1, determine the forces and displacement
in the bars due to applied for P at D, given the area A and elastic modulus E.

Q2. A composite hoop, shown in figure 2, consists of a brass hoop of 300-mm internal radius and
3-mm thickness, and a steel hoop of 303 mm internal radius and 6 mm radial thickness. Both hoops
are 6 mm thick normal to the plane of the hoop. If a radial pressure of 1.4 MN/m2 is put in the
brass hoop, estimate the tangential forces in the brass and steel hoops.

Q2. A closed right circular cylinder is filled with compressed natural gas. The internal pressure
acting is p = 100 MPa. If the cylinder inner diameter is 100 mm, length is 500 mm and wall
thickness 5 mm, calculate tangential and axial stresses developed in the cylinder. Make necessary
assumptions and justify while solving this problem.

Q3. Consider a thin walled spherical shell (imagine something similar to an air-filled sphere-
shaped balloon) of inner radius, r, and wall thickness, t. The pressure inside the shell is, p. If the
elastic modulus of the material is, E, find the hoop or circumferential stress in the wall of the shell.
