The Meaning of SWOT Analysis:
SWOT analysis is a key part of any business and strategic plan. SWOT stands for "Strengthen,
Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats". SWOT analyses is a framework of for two-by-two
matrix (2x2). It is also a framework for identifying and analyzing an organization strengthens,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The primary aim of SWOT analysis is to aid
organizations in increasing awareness of the factors in making a strategic business decision.
SWOT execute this by analyzing the both internal factors which includes ‘Strengths and
Weaknesses' and external factors which includes ‘Opportunities and Threats’ that can impact
of the viability of a strategic decision.

SWOT analysis frameworks is created by "Albert Humphrey" who tested this approach in the
1960s and 1970s at the "Stanford Research Institute". He makes this analysis based on data
collect from "Fortune 500 Companies”, by using this analysis organizations can easily develop.
The SWOT analysis has been adopted by all types of organization to making strategic decision.

SWOT analysis is the most commonly used framework, which was used by every business
entity. But it is also used by non-profit organizations. Individuals also used this approach for
personal assessments purpose to found out their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats. Additionally, it can be used to assess initiatives, products, projects etc. As an example-
Chief information officers could use SWOT analysis to create a “Strategic Planning Template”.

Need of SWOT Analysis:
SWOT analysis is often used either at the start of, or as a part of a strategic planning practice.
SWOT analysis framework is considered as a powerful support for strategic decision making,
because it ensures an organization to figure out opportunities for success that were previously
unrecognized and highlights threats before they become overly burden.

For example - Exercise SWOT analysis in an organization can figure out the market niche in
which a business can gain competitive advantage. It can also help individuals to plot career
success by pinpointing a path that maximizes their strengths, while alerting them to threats that
can minimize their achievements. If we consider graph then it shows-

According to the above graph, first we have to figure out our strengths and build up those
strengths. Then we have to found out our weaknesses and try to mitigate those weaknesses.
After that we have to capitalize our opportunities to maximize advantages. At last, we have to
identify the threats to minimize disadvantages.

SWOT Analysis Diagram:
A SWOT diagram analyzes a project or business ventures by focusing on each of these factors.
It is typically consisting of four boxes, one for each area but the exact shape may vary on the
design. SWOT diagram can be especially useful when trying to decide whether or not to embark
on a certain venture or strategy by visualizing the pros and cons. By clearly outlining all
positives and negatives of an organization SWOT analysis makes it easier to decide how to
move forward. Now we are showing the SWOT diagram used by many organizations for
strategic planning purpose-

Description:
➢ Firstly, we have to figure out how to build strength on our organization? For this, a
SWOT analysis will help us to identify the parts of our business which are doing well,
this is known as ‘Critical Success Factors’. Aspect of our business that are strong and
give us competitive advantage. Recognizing these aspects will help us to continue on
at high level and we will need to find ways to leverage and build upon these strengths
to grow our business. This is an internal factor which has overall positive impact on the
business.

➢ Secondly, we have to identify the ways to improve on our weaknesses. Weaknesses are
the factors that put us at a disadvantage to our competitors. Figuring out what those
weaknesses are and taking actions to mitigate them before they hurt our business. This
requires candid and detailed analysis of what is going wrong within our organization.
This is an essential purpose to minimize weaknesses. This is an internal factor but it
gave a negative impact on the business.

➢ Thirdly, we have to identify the opportunities available for our business. We have to
pinpoints openings in the market place that we can take advantage of to help our
business grow. These opportunities are used by external factors such as market
fluctuations. trends, etc. we have to always consider our strengths and weaknesses to
assessing these opportunities. Not every opportunity is fruitful for the organization, but
it maybe not too far down the line. It will give a positive impact on our organization.

➢ Finally, we have to figure out how to respond to threats for our business, Market
fluctuations, governmental regulations, public perception, etc. are all external factors
that may affect our business in a negative way. By identifying these threats, we can
easily find out the way to eliminate these threats, which will be clearing the way for
running the business smoothly. As with opportunities we need strengths and
weaknesses for assessing at the threats.

Importance of SWOT Analysis for Organizations:
The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis is mostly used strategic
decision-making technique that organizations apply to practice a comprehensive and
competitive analysis of various internal and external factors. The result of SWOT analysis
provides organizations to make effective and efficient planning for the future.

The value of the SWOT analysis often depends on the objectives of those who carry out the
SWOT test and they can come up with a aim of relevant information analysis. The results are
so much useful for the organizations. There was a proverb, “Winners recognize their
weaknesses and focus on their strengths, while losers recognize their strengths and focus on
their weaknesses. So, it is also important to focus on the potential opportunities and crucial
threats for organizational success. Some importance is including-

SWOT analysis of East West University Bangladesh is represented below:

East West University Strengths:


➢ East west University of Bangladesh is very popular to students.

➢ Costs are affordable compare to others (BRAC, NSU).

➢ Location in Dhaka city.

➢ The optimum size of each class is 40 students only.

➢ Full-time faculty teach most classes, and there is a strong bond and a high level of
interaction between faculty and students.

➢ Expertise in teaching non-traditional students.

➢ Accessibility-day, night formats.

➢ Interdisciplinary and experiential education at both the undergraduate and graduate


levels.

➢ Faculty service to the university and the larger community.

➢ Efficient management.

Weaknesses of East West University:


❖ Underfunding in many departments and programs.

❖ Small campus compares to the numbers of students and Underdeveloped campus life
and facilities.

❖ Lack of financial support for poor students.

❖ Insufficient book in library and most of them are out dated.

❖ Lack of understanding at many facts like inadequate resources for recruitment,


retention, advising, and marketing, all the things needed to recruit and retain students.

❖ Lack of infrastructure including physical, financial, and human resources; inadequate


capital funds to support all that we want to do.

Opportunities of East West University:
✓ Full scholarship for the students who are needed.

✓ Continuing education for intellectual enrichment and for students of all section.

✓ Online result and information opportunities.

✓ Outdoor campus facility.

✓ Unlike public university who are suffering from session jot, these are not seen in East
West University.

✓ More conversations and partnerships with local employers, those in the private,
nonprofit, and public sectors. So those students are more appealing to them.

✓ Educational opportunities related to Science, Arts and Commerce.

✓ International and off-campus study and exchange programs.

✓ Tuition fees is affordable for students.

Threats to East West University:


• Threats created by poor performing students.

• Risk of losing prominent faculty and staff for genuinely better opportunities at other
universities or locally.

• Smaller campus compares to other new campus of established universities.

• Growing competition from nearby public universities and small privates in central
Dhaka.

• Establishment of new private university.

Conclusion:
Both organizations and individuals use SWOT analysis (strengths, Weaknesses, opportunities,
Threats) as jumping off point for new projects, improvements and initiatives. It's a way of
analyzing the internal and external factors that will impact product, project, place, person etc.,
because SWOT analysis uncovers opportunities for success and highlights threats. It's a
powerful method for strategic decision making when starting a new venture. SWOT can
identify a new market niche for instance or help individuals to plan carcer success by
maximizing the strengths and minimizing threats that might inhibit achievement.
