THEORY OF THE SELF

Self is very hard to define especially when we talking ourselves because as a person who
has self I find t hard to define my self like what is my behavior or personality because it is
changing every time. So understand the self there are many philosophers that made theory
about the self. And this perspectives and aspects of the self that has been discussed. According
to Socrates

The perspective of different philosophers about self is the same, different, contradicting
or has a connection to other perspectives. Like to Socrates and Plato their perspectives about
self has a connection because Socrates believes that soul is immortal and to Plato just added
some detail to it like the tripartite soul which is the Reason, Passion and Physical Appetite and
he agree to the theory of Socrates. The perception of St. Agustine of Hippo and Socrates is the
same or has a connection to one other because they both believe that the body has a fate to
die and when a body die it will change and if it can change it is mortal and the soul is immortal
and has a fate of eternally.

In modern context, self has been define based to the situation and made distinction
between the past and modern time. The identity of a person has been define based from the
society and to our preference of ourselves.

The self in modern times has been discussed. first, self is digitalized, has multicultural
identities and pluralized selves. Self is digitalized because most of the people today are
dependent to technology and technology affect the self of a person. Self has multicultural
identities because of the global migration that means that when a person or family move to a
another place or country that has a very different culture form their country then it will affect
their self specifically in their personality or attitude, for example when a girl is being liberated in
physical or that can be seen on how she dressed but she is not that liberated on how she talks
then the different cultures that she experienced had been integrates mixed to her. Self has
pluralized selves because of the technology and digitalization like in social media the people
tends to hide their true identity thus they create other self that will be good in physical aspect
or that the standard of society in terms of beauty and they hide their feelings, emotions and
true identity so that they can be accepted in the society.

Halo effect refers to physical attractiveness or stereotyping. People nowadays just based
on the physical appearance of person and stereotyping them like if it is good looking they trust
them easily and are friendly to them but if it is not good looking they will not trust them easily
and they will judge them as bad person. Also in applying a job people tend to hire or give many
chances to those who have a beautiful face than who has not even if they have more
credentials or intelligent than them like in South Korea and because of that standard they force
to have a plastic surgery in their face so that they can be accepted to their job.

The gender identity, sexual identity and sexual orientation are the aspects of the self
because they made and build the self. Gender identity refers to female and male, the society
categorized us to female and male by differentiating what private part we have in our body.
Sexual identity is how one thinks of oneself in terms to which one is romantically or sexually
attracted, means that the individual is the one that identify their sexuality based on his/her
preference or they choose not to. Sexual orientation is the general disposition towards partners
that can be the same sex, the opposite or both the sexes.

The theory of the self for me is that it is changing because every part of the self will
change in terms of are body, behavior, personality and attitude. Body will change through time,
the composition of our body change every second and when a person undergo puberty that is
the time that the person will undergo a big change in the body and also on the behavior of the
person. Because after they undergo puberty they will be mature and be more independent.
The personality and attitude of a person will change through their experiences, circumstances
and situations that they experienced. The attitude of self will change for example when a
person undergo a great change in his status or from being rich she become poor and when she
is still rich she has an attitude of not giving importance to the blessings that she received but
when she became poor she give more importance to it because she knows how hard it is to
have that blessings. The personality of the self will change like when a person is easily to trust
people even if it is that he just know the person in a short period of time and the people he
trust has been backstabbing him ever since then his personality will greatly change after he
knows about it. The change is that from being a person who trust easily, he will be more careful
in giving his trust to people and tends to not trust people on his surroundings and he will doubt
all of them. Also, as the standard society change through time then the self will also change
because they want to be accepted by the society
