Architectus: Chief Builder

“Every building is like a person. Single and unrepeatable.” Have you heard
of this quote? If not then let me introduce to you, Louis Sullivan, the person
behind this famous quote. Louis Henry Sullivan, more commonly known as
Louis Sullivan is known as Chicago’s “Father of Skycrapers” and “Father of
Modernism”. He was an influential American architect. His attention to detail,
use of ornamentation on emerging tall buildings of the late 19th century made
him one of the most influential architects of the modernist period. Apart from
the above titles, Sullivan also holds another one which is “the recognized
trinity of American architecture”.
But the real question is, what is architecture really about? Most people see
architects as someone who design a building, and somewhat always second to
an engineer. People are partly correct though, except for the second to
engineer part. In the field of engineering and architecture, there is no
competition and both are important factors for building a structure. Engineers
are people that are responsible for applying mathematical and scientific
knowledge in order to develop technical solutions for a problem.
Architects are people that are trained to plan, design and oversee the
construction of the buildings. To practice architecture means to provide
services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the
site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their
principal purpose. They are not just involved in the design of a building. As a
licensed professional they are also responsible for public safety and overseeing
of projects. Their role is important in every stage of the building's construction,
from the initial concept to the opening ceremony when the building is
complete.
I chose architecture as the topic of this informative essay because it is my
desired career. At first I wanted to be an engineer but as time passes by, I feel
like I’m more closer to architecture. It is a job, or a lifestyle rather, where I can
freely be artistic and have personal expression. In the near future, I also want
to see the glee in the faces of the people I’ll be able to help have a comfortable
place to live or work in. I’m looking forward to making buildings that tells some
sort of story. As someone who is very attached to art and music, I also want
my future buildings to express different stories, from different perspectives. In
my own perspective, architecture is the reaching out for the truth.
