Performance Measurement is an integrated part of the organization. It helps the mangers to identify the
efficiency of an employee. The performance measurement scale helps to determine the ability of an
employee to achieve organizational objectives.

Accounts executive at Paychex, Inc works under minimum supervision of manages and they have to
work on many offices. Their responsibility might limit to training new executives, analyzing customers
needs and desires, communication with clients, supporting clients on payroll management in the early
times. Besides that they need to do some documentation & schedule works as well. Keeping the nature
of the job of Account Executives of Paychex,Inc the managers of the company might consider the
combination approach would be the perfect fit for the company in this scenario. The combination
approach is both cost & time effective and also cope with the company objectives. An employee’s
performance is measured based on both the ability to achieve organizational goal and the skills or how
he does the job in most efficient way. So the best measurement approach here should be mix of both
result & behavior based approach. As it is easy to manage the performance, reward and employee
productivity through this approach. Keeping the operation of business in mind it is important to
maintain good relationship with external companies. Behavioral appraisals help the manager to evaluate
vital criteria such as rapport with customers and positive contribution in meetings. Good relationship
with external companies helps the organization to explore and expand market leading to competitive
product or service manufacture of a company. It also boosts employee morale that initially leads to
increase in productivity within the employees of the organization.

The Managers of the Paychex,Inc can consider using the combination approach to measure the
performance of the accounts executives of the company though it is little more time consuming but
effective in the long run.

Based on the description mentioned on the case, we saw the Job responsibilities of an Account
Executive of Paychex, Inc. Based on the description we can identify that the type of behavior is needed
to be assessed for measuring the performance of employees.

Using the behavior approach and result approach as a guide the check marks beside the job
responsibilities are mentioned below:

⮚ Performing client needs analysis to ensure that the major market services product can meet clients
requirements. (Behavior Approach)
⮚ Establishing clients on the host processing system. (Behavior Approach).
⮚ Acting as primary contact for the client during the conversion process.(Behavior Approach).
⮚ Supporting clients during the first few payrolls.( Results Approach)
⮚ Completing the required documentation to turn the client over to customer service for ongoing
support. (Result Approach).
⮚ Scheduling And making client calls and when necessary, supporting sales representatives in
presales efforts. ( Result, Behavior Approach).
⮚ Keeping abreat of the major marketing service system and software changes, major changes and
trends in the PC industry and the changes in wage & tax law. (Result Apporach).

In this particular scenario and the description mentioned in the case the firm Paychex,Inc needs to use
a combination of both behavior approach & Results approach. If we consider the first description –
performing client needs analysis to ensure that the major marketing services product can meet client’s
requirements and expectations, this particular description determines outcomes occur in the distant
future which is best relatable to behavior approach. The second description, establishing clients on the

host processing system that determines the link between behaviors and results is uncertain and not
obvious. Acting as primary contact for the client during the conversion process also determines the
same characteristics as the first job responsibility means the company need to assess behavior approach.
Supporting clients during the first few payrolls, this characteristic resembles the company needs to
asses results approach as behaviors and results are related to each other meaning that the executive
needs to give support clients during their first few months.

Completing the required documentation & keeping abreast of the major market services systems &
software changes these responsibilities determines that some certain skills are required to do some
certain types of activities, means that the company Paychex, Inc needs to assess the results approach
to measure performance. Scheduling & making client calls and when necessary and support from the
sales representative determining the skill that are mandatory to get the job done also the connection
required between result & behavior, for that Paychex, Inc, need the combination of both behavior
approach & Results approach to measure performance of the employee.
