As Endurance sailed close to Antarctica, it became
stuck in floating ice. The ice slowly moved Endurance
farther and farther away from Antarctica. The longer
the crew were stuck, the less food they had.
Then, the crew’s luck got worse. The ice squeezed
Endurance harder and harder until the ship was crushed.
Shackleton and his crew had to leave their broken,
sinking ship. Luckily, they had lifeboats—small boats
that they could use to escape.

to South Georgia Island. He hoped that fishermen
there could come help his crew.
Shackleton’s lifeboat was caught in a storm; he
reached South Georgia Island safely, but he was many
miles from the fishermen. So Shackleton left his boat
and walked for thirty-six hours until he reached help.
The fishermen hurried with him back to Elephant
Island with food and medicine. Incredibly, Shackleton
and his entire crew were rescued.
