1.1.1.DICTIONARY MEANING OFSUPERMARKET

Dictionary meaning of “A large retail market that sells food and other household

1.1.2.ORIGIONAL MEANING OF SUPERMARKET

A large form of the traditional grocery store , is a self-service shop offering a wide
variety of food and household products , organized into aisles. It is larger in size and has a
wider selection than a traditional grocery store, but is smaller and more limited in the range
of merchandise than a hypermarket or big box market. Supermarket established which main
purpose is to bring a consumer an important variety of products from different brands, prices
and styles. With a minimum of RS.50,000,000 per annual sales. A supermarket – 1500 to
1500m2 of sales area. Supermarkets, sale of perishable and non-perishable consumer goods.

The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy and backed goods
aisles, along with self-space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for non-faced
items such as kitchenware, household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Some
supermarkets also sell a variety of other house hold products that are consumed regularly,
such as new condoms(where permitted), medicine, cloths and some stores sell a much wider
range of non-food products: DVDs, sporting equipment, board games and seasonal ieams.

The traditional supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a


single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to
customers. The basic appeal is the availability of a board selection of goods under the single
roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the
convenience of shopping hours that extend into evening or even 24 hours of the day.

Supermarkets provide a wide variety of goods and services under climate-controlled


conditions. To freely select their favourite brand, quality and quantity of products.
Supermarket normally charger to compare to other retailers. Price is the main object with
attracts the customers of all classes.

The supermarkets in India retail food items and household goods along with
garments, home furnishings, toiletries, consumers durables and electronics to name a few.
The Indian retail sector has tremendous growth opportunity for organised retailing.
Supermarket in India recent years has been quite heartening. With the economic liberalisation
and opening up Indian markets to foreign investments. Further the number of individual
retailers is around 12 million in India, which is highest in the world. The growth of Indian
supermarkets can be attributed to the raising of the India service sector. Although, India still
lags way behind in organized retailing as per international standards but recent trends show
that the scope of growth of organised retailing is very high. The growth of the Indian
supermarkets can be attributed to the raising of the Indian service sector. Today a number of
Indian business houses are diversifying in to the retail sector to capitalize on the tremendous
growth opportunity.

1.1.6. INDIA’S FIRST SPERMARKET

Nilgiris is a supermarket chain in India. It is oldest supermarket in India with origins


dating back to 1905 and hence its products are sold under the brand name of “Nilgiris 1904”.
It also stores brand, and produces dairy, backed goods, chocolates and other products under
the same name.

1.1.7. SUPERMARKETS IN KARAIKUDI

Karaikudi has totally 4 reputed supermarkets. The first one to begin is the Janapriya
supermarket. It was located near periyar statue in the sekkalai road. It is very big very popular
supermarket in karaikudi. It is fully air conditioned with 5 counters and automatic door
sensors. After some days the next to begin is the NSM supermarket situated opposite to daily
market. The next giant was ferina supermarket which is located in the sekkalai road opposite
to signal. Annai supermarket is one of the best supermarkets in karaikudi situated on opposite
to railway feeder opposite in karaikudi.

Employee welfare means, "Efforts to make life worth living for workmen".
"Employee welfare is a comprehensive term including various services, benefits and facilities
offered to employees & by the employers. The employer makes life worth living for
employees." According to Todd "employee welfare means anything done for the comfort and
improvement, intellectual or social, of the employees over and above the wages paid which is
not a necessity of the industry."

The term welfare suggest many ideas , meanings and connotations, such as the state of well-
being health, happiness, prosperity and the development of human resource. The concept of
welfare can be approached from various angles. Employee welfare defined has been defined
as various ways, through unfortunately no single has found universal acceptance.

1.1.13. FACTORIES ACT, 1948: PROVISIONS FOR EMPLOYEE WELFARE IN
INDIA

Some of the provisions relating to the employee welfare as mentioned in the factories
act, 1948: washing facilities, facilities for storing and drying clothing, and facilities for
sitting, first aid appliances, canteens, shelters, rest room and lunch room, creches and welfare
officers.

employee maintenance. Another equally important segment in the employee’s general

The cost of the accidents are enormous in suffering to the injured, in reactions
or less of earnings, in disabilities and in capabilities which affect those involved and
completion, insurance and legal cost.

An employee very often comes across problems which have emotional


control. For example, he may be nearing retirement and feeling insecure or he may be
getting promotion and feeling hesitant to shoulder increased responsibility or be may
be worried due to same problem.

3.1. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

To use the proper methodology is essential part of any research, in order to conduct
the research study. The study is descriptive in nature the study based on primary and
secondary data.

3.1.1. DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH

Descriptive research is used to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon


being studied. Hence, descriptive research cannot describe what caused a situation. Thus,
descriptive research cannot be used to as the basis of a casual relationship, where one variable
affects another.

Descriptive researches are to be using collect the data from employees of supermarket
in karaikudi.

3.2. DATA COLLCTION

Data collection is the process of gathering and measuring information on targeted


variables in an established systematic fashion, which then enables one to answer relevant
questions and evaluate outcomes.

3.2.1. SOURCES OF DATA

 Primary data
 Secondary data

3.2.2. PRIMARY DATA

The new fresh data is called primary data. For this study purpose primary data is used.
The data are collected through questionnaire method.

The questionnaire was distributed directly by the researcher himself to the sample
respondents. The researchers are collected primary data through questionnaire to the
employees of supermarkets in karaikudi.

3.2.3. SCONDARY DATA

Secondary data means the data are already available that collected and analysed for
related sources such as books, journals, magazines, newspapers, articles and different
websites.

3.3.1. STUDY OF THE AREA

A study conducted in karaikudi town. It is part of the are commonly referred to as


“chettinad and has been declared a heritage city by the government of Tamilnadu.

3.3.2. STUDY OF THE PERIOD

The present study aims to measuring the employee’s welfare facilities available in
super markets from karaikudi during the January to March, 2017.

3.4. SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

3.4.1. SAMPLING

Sampling means statistics, quality assurance and survey methodology

3.4.2. SAMPLING DISIGN

For the purpose of study the researcher were selected based on convenient sampling
technique.

3.4.3. CONVINIENIENT SAMPLING

A convenient sample is one of the main type of non- probability of sampling methods.
A convenient sample is made up of people who are easy to reach.

3.4.4. SAMPLING AREA

 Janapriya supermarket - jawahar street,


 Ferina supermarket - sekkalai road,
 NSM shopping mall - sekkalai road,
 Annai supermarket - railway feeder road,

3.4.5. SAMPLE SIZE

A structured questionnaire was prepared and was administered to the respondents through
a personal interview method. The researcher contacted the respondents personally. The study
was taken on 90 respondents.

 Janapriya supermarket - 40 employees


 NSM shopping mall - 20 employees
 Ferina supermarket - 20 employees
 Annai supermarket - 10 employees

3.5. STATISTICAL TOOLS USED FOR ANALYSIS

The collected information were reviewed and consolidated into a master table. For the
purpose of analysis the data were further processed by using statistical tools.

The following tools were used to analysis the data;

2. Ranking analysis.

3.6. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

 The data was collected during the working hours, employees were busy in their
routine work, so they were less responsive.

 Inadequancy of time was a major limiting factor faced by researcher.

 The study was carried out only selected area in karaikudi.

 The respondents may be provided bias information.

5. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS


The findings of the present study have been summarized on the basis of various
objectives and it has been presented on the basis of types of statistical tools applied.

5.1.1 RESULTS OF PERCENTAGE AND RANKING ANALYSIS


 The study shown a majority (75.56%) of the respondents were female.

 The study shown a majority (44.4%) of the respondents were age between 21-30.

 The study shown a majority (51.11%) of the respondents were unmarried.

 The study shown a majority 44.4% of the respondents were Janapriya supermarket,
22.2% of the respondents were NSM supermarket, 22.2% of the respondents were
FSM supermarket and remaining 11.1% of the respondent were Annai supermarket.

 The study shown a majority (38.9%) of the respondents were 1-2 years.

 The study shown a majority (35.6%) of respondents were 70,000 – 1, 00,000.

 The study shown a 1 st rank is safety & security, 2 nd rank is first aid , 3 rd rank is
medical leave , 4 th rank is lunch room , 5 th rank is bonus , 6th rank is rest room , 7
th rank is allowances ,8 th rank is working condition, 9 th rank is incentives , 10 th
rank is over time.

 The study shown a majority (46.67%) of the respondents were good.

 The study shown a majority (44.44%) respondents were poor.

 The study shown a 1 st problem is no overtime ,2 nd is problem lack of lunch room


facility,3 rd problem is no allowances , 4 th is no problem incentives , 5 th is no
problem of rest room facility , 6 th is no problem medical leave , 7 th is no problem
bonus ,8 th is problem lack of working condition , 9 th problem is no first aid , 10 th

5.2. SUGGESSION;
 The researcher suggests that, there is no overtime for the employee. If should
be give overtime with salary.

 There is no problem in safety and security of the employees.

 The employees are faced some difficulties rainy season. Due to there is no
proper arrangements in the lunch room.

 If suggest that, the employees are unaware about welfare facilities in the NSM
and FSM.

 If suggest that, most of employees are women.

 The employees are treated as family members in the Annai supermarket.

 There is a long work in hours in the Janapriya supermarket. So, that the
employees are felt inconvenience.

CONCLUSION
The study of employees welfare facilities are conducted with the objective to find out
the different welfare facilities provided by the supermarkets at karaikudi. The researcher
concludes that based on the data reveals that JSM, NSM, FSM, Annai supermarkets offered
by the welfare facilities to their employees. The researcher felt that, there is no over time in
the supermarket and there is no proper lunch room facilities. Employees are faced problems,
especially in over timing and lunch room facility and allow over time facilities and improve
their welfare facility.
