Activity 1.2. Getting to Know our Breathing System: Functions

Objective: Describe the functions of each part of the respiratory system.

Materials: diagram of the respiratory system, any science book

Procedure
Refer to the diagram in Activity 1.1 and check your understanding of the respiratory system by
giving the functions of each numbered part. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Key Parts Functions

1.Nasal Cavity Warms moisten and filters the air that enters the nose
2.Pharynx Common passageway of food and air
3.Larynx Passageway of air
4.Trachea Passageway of air
5.Lungs Main organs of respiratory system
6.Bronchi Conduct air from the trachea to the alveoli
7.Alveoli Site of gas exchange
8.Diaphragm Muscle that contracts and relaxes during breathing

Questions
1.What important role do alveoli play in our body?
Alveoli are an important part of the respiratory system whose function to exchange oxygen and
carbon dioxide.
2.What is the important role of diaphragm in our body?
The diaphragm controls the breathing process
3.Trace the pathway of air by naming the parts of the respiratory system to which it
passes.
The air (oxygen) through nose nasal cavity-pharynx-larynx-trachea-bronchi-bronchioles-alveoli
Modify and be creative! Try your own activity! You may design and explore
more to check your understanding. Ex. Look for lato (seaweed) or a bunch of
fruits (or cauliflower) and relate each part of the sample to the key parts of the
respiratory system.
