CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION

 The Shear Stress and Friction Angle of the SP Soil increase for fiber inclusion

percentage of 2% and 4% but at fiber inclusion percentage of 6% it decreased with

respect to 4%. The increase of fiber from 0% to 4% resulted in increasing the shear

stress from 25.19 kPa to 97.21 kPa respectively, under the normal stress equal to 54.5

kPa. The addition of water hyacinth fiber up to 4% increased the shear stress of the

SP Soil up to 285.91%. When the normal stress was increased to 109 kPa, shear

stress of the SP Soil increased from 40.58 kPa to 107.06 kPa or 163.2% increase.

When the normal stress was increased to 163.5 kPa the shear stress of the SP Soil

increased from 53.70 kPa to 119.03 kPa or an increase of 121.66%. The increase in

the percentages of the water hyacinth fiber from 0.0% to 4% resulted in increasing

the friction angle from 19.29o to 42.80o. The addition of water hyacinth fiber up to

4% increased the friction angle of the SP Soil up to 121.88% and the state of packing

from very loose to dense.

 Through grain size analysis, plastic limit test, and liquid limit test the soil mass used

in the research was determined to be poorly graded sand under group symbol SP of

Unified Soil Classification system

 The 4% fiber inclusion percentage yields the highest value of friction angle and shear

stress.

RECOMMENDATION

To further the development of this study, the following are recommended:

 Conduct other laboratory tests such as California Bearing Ratio Test, Triaxial

Test, Unconfined Compressive Strength Test, Standard Proctor Test and the like.

The objective of this recommendation is to determine the other strength

parameters of the soil reinforced with randomly distributed water hyacinth fiber

 Utilize soil sample hauled from different locations, of different soil

characteristics/properties, and under different environmental/weather condition.

The purpose of this recommendation is to compare the effects of water hyacinth

fiber inclusion to different soil samples.

 Test fiber inclusion with different lengths with 4% inclusion by weight. The goal

of this recommendation is to determine the fiber length per 4% percentage that

will yield the maximum shear stress of soil.
