Translation of Axes

Translation of Axes
• The process of changing from one pair of axes
to another is called transformation of
coordinates.
( x, y )  ( x, y)
• Transformations of new axes parallel to the
original axes are called translation of axes.
Formula:
x  x  h
y  y  k

• These formulas give the relations of the old

and new coordinates.
Example:
• Find the new coordinates of the point P(4,-2)
if the origin is moved to (-2,3) by translation.
Solution:
x  x  h y  y  k
P (4,2)  ( x, y ) and (2,3)  (h, k )

x'  4  (2) y  2  (3)

Therefore , the new coordinate s of P is (6,5).
Example 2:
• Find the new equation of the circle

x  y  6x  4y 3  0
2 2

after a translation that moves the origin to the

point (3,-2).
Example3
• Translate the axes so that no first-degree
terms will appear in the transformed equation
of the circle

x  y  6 x  10 y  12  0
2 2
Exercise: (1/2 crosswise)
1. Determine the new coordinates of the following
points if the axes are translated so that the new
origin is at the given point O’.

(3,2), (3,-2), (-3,-2) from O’(4,1)

2. Find the new equation if the origin is moved to the

given point O’ by a translation of axes.

x  y  4x  4 y  2  0
2 2
O(1,3)
Quiz
• Find the point to which the origin must be
translated in order for the transformed
equation of

x  y  10 x  12 y  3  0
2 2

to have no first-degree terms.
