Work Experience
On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is a hands-on method of teaching the
skills, knowledge, and competencies needed for students to perform a specific job
within a specific workplace. Students learn in an environment where they will need to
practice the knowledge and skills obtained during their training. On-the-job training uses
the existing workplace tools, machines, documents, equipment, and knowledge to teach
students how to effectively do their job.
On-the-job training is part of our curriculum and it is a six-unit subject. We in
Philippine Christian University must take this course before we proceed to our final year
in college. We are first tasked to prepare our curriculum vitae for our job applications.
Given the fact that our country is still affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, I still want to
experience first-hand how it is to work in an accounting firm that will hopefully respond
to my application. Out of all the firms that I’ve applied, two firms responded, and I chose
Aqubic Company. It has three offices here in Cavite, and I was assigned to their office in
General Trias, Cavite. One of the main reasons I chose this firm is that they allow face
to face internships.
I only experienced face to face internship in my first week because our school
mandated that all of us must be using work from home set-up for our internship. It was a
hassle in the first weeks as we cannot get proper guidance on how to do our tasks
properly. I was tasked to encode expenses and disbursements of some of their clients
for the month of February and March. I also encoded sales for the month of February
and March. I became familiar with Microsoft excel as this is one of the main applications
we use for encoding. I learned certain functions and formulas in Microsoft Excel that is
necessary for keeping and encoding disbursements, expenses, and sales for a certain
period. If I’m done encoding, I will do manual bookkeeping for the other clients. One of
the most exciting parts of internship is meeting new people. I only met them for a week
but even if our set-up is only work from home, my supervisors and other staff in our
office are continuously guiding me into making me a better intern for them. We use
google mail and messenger to communicate and to tell me what tasks I must achieve
for today. We also use the said applications to transfer files and documents. We are
also using zoom for video call meetings. They also taught me how to use how to use
Alphalist Data Entry and Alphalist Validation for the Bureau of Internal Revenue. This
software is used to file taxes online and to submit tax forms.
As of now, we are still continuing our work from home set-up and I already spent
256 hours of internship duty.
