The Syntron Automatic Power Factor Control Relay type 1143 is specially designed to provide
accurate and reliable control of power factor of an electrical installation

1143 has microcontroller technology. This is a Syntron exclusive trademarked as Cosrobot TM.
Cosrobot TM technology evolved at Syntron specifically for use in APFCRs where the problems of
electrical noise, transients etc. are accentuated, and normal microprocessor technology fails under
such conditions. Cosrobot TM 1143 is now more reliable and easier to troubleshoot. Operationally
the Cosrobot TM APFCR 1143 is identical to the previous IC based version for compatibility with
older panels. Some features, not available with IC based APFCRs, are provided additionally in
1143 :

1. Some users, with peculiarly configured systems used to find it difficult to us Syntron
APFCRs with the Low Current Cutout set at 20%. Low Current Cutout is now reduced to
5% to accommodate such systems.
2. Some users demand timing between stages different from our standard. This modification
is needed for thyristor controlled capacitors, windmills etc. This timing can now be factory
set at a value from 0.2 seconds to 25 seconds.
3. The First in First out sequence now comes with built in software timers – one for each
stage – so that the APFCR waits only if the next needed capacitor is still discharging,
otherwise it is switched on immediately.
4. Any other sequence such as 1+2+2+……, 1+2+4+8……etc. are also given, factory
programmed as per order.
5. There are two alarm conditions that are directly displayed Current Low (the display reads
1 uuu) and Wrong Wiring (the display reads 2 uuu). This condition is detected if your
wiring of the APFCR is wrong, and will persist till you correctly wire the APFCR into the
system.
6. A unique TEST function is incorporated the APFCR goes into TEST MODE when the
TEST push button is pressed. In this mode the Microcontroller provides the display of
1.000. The APFCR can then be tested as per procedure given in the User Manual,
regardless of the external conditions.

Function :

The APFCR controls the power facror of the installation by giving signals to switch on or off
power factor correction capacitors. It should be noted that this is only a Relay constituting the so to
say ‘brain’ of the system. It needs complete panels incorporating the capacitors switching
contactors, fuses, isolators etc.
The Microcontrollers performs all the necessary functions measuring settings, measuring the power
factor, detecting Low Current, detecting Wrong Wiring, operating the logic, and operating the
switching relays.

These compact Controllers provide cost effective solution to the control of Power Factor in
smaller installations. Available for a variety of applications, the Controllers can be
programmed to suit the User needs. The Controllers are housed in 96 x 96 DIN flush
mounting enclosure with behind the panel depth of only 70mm. 1188 / 2 step is useful to
compensate the Power Factor of major on / off loads such as compressors. It is also useful
for correcting the Power Factor on the secondary of a Utility Supply Transformer (usually
pole mounted). by means of two unequal capacitors used for the two stages, to take care of
load variations. 1188 /4 step is used as a regular Automatic Power Factor Controller. It is
available for Three Phase as well as for Single Phase applications. The single-phase
version is required for extremely unbalanced loads. Where three single-phase systems are
used in star connection. 1188 / 4 steps is available in a variety of sequences. First In First
Out, Binary normal timing and Binary Fast Discharge timing modes. Please ask us for
details. Normally supplied is First In First Out sequence. Both models are available for
thyristor switched capacitor systems.

The display is 7-segment 12.7mm bright LED display 3 ½ digit for 1188 / 2 steps and 2 ½
digit for the 1188 / 4 step. LEDs provide appropriate indications of lag, lead. on, off and
the stages on.

The display provides indication of alarm condition. The display reads 1.uuu (1.uu for 4
step) when current is very low. The display reads 2.uuu (2.uu for 4 step) when your
external connections are wrong.

There are no settings to make. The controller limits are factory programmed. The
controller is designed to provide the best possible power factor under the system
constrainst.

Specifications :

Voltage: 380 to 470 Volts three-phase AC for voltage sensing. (100 to 270 Volts for
single-phase version) 110 V P T operated versions available for HT application.

Aux Voltage : 210 to 260 Volts single-phase AC 50 Hz as Auxiliary supply. (110V version
also available)

The Syntron Truly intelligent Auomatic Power Factor Controller type 1179 is specially designed to
provide accurate and reliable control of Power Factor of an electrical installation.

1179 has Microcontroller technology. This is a Syntron exclusive trademarked as

Cosrobot TM. Cosrobot TM technology evolved at Syntron specifically for use in APFCRs where
the problems of electrical noise, translents etc. Are accentuated, and normal microprocessor
technology fails under such conditions.

1179 is a quantum leap over the other no- intelligent APFCRs like 1143.

Function :

When switched on first, the 1179 measures it’s environment, and tells the user if there is anything
wrong. Thus if the load current is extremely low (below about 0.5%) it gives a different display. If
your connections are not correct , it gives on alarm, etc.
Once it knows that the panel is correctly connected in the system, it measures all capacitors under
its control by switching them one by one, and stores their values and location (stage nos.) In
memory. It then measures the Kvar at the main incomer and calculates the ‘best fit’ – i.e. The
stages that when switched on would provide the best possible power factor without allowing it to go
leading.
1179 then proceeds to switch them on one by one, all the time assessing the effect on the system,
and re-calculating the Kvar requirement. The largest capacitor among those destined to be on is
switched on first, so that the Power Factor is brought up as quickly as possible.
It switches off the capacitors one by one in like fashion, if the Power Factor goes leading, but this
time switching the smallest capacitor off first,
Each stage of 1179 has a corresponding software timer in memory. Thus whenever a stage is
switched off the times begins counting 60 seconds, 1179 then does not switch it on even if needed,
because that capacitor is charged, and re-switching it would ruin it on transients. 1179 then re-
calculates and switches on other combination that smallest capacitor off first.
Each stage of the 1179 has a corresponding software timer I memory. Thus whenever a stage is
switched off the times begins counting 60 seconds, 1179 then does not switch it on even if needed
because that capacitor is charged, and re-switching it would ruin it on transients. 1179 then re-
calculates and switches on other combination that will do the job. However the capacitor is used
immediately after the timing is over. Manual Control of the 1179 is also unique. You can select
any stages and switch ONLY that stage on or off, without affecting the other stages.

Specifications :

Voltage 400 - 415 – 440 V. (specify one) three phase three wire 50 Hz nominal
: 110 V three phase versions available on request.
Current : Through CT on the Main Incomer. 1 Amp or 5 Amp secondary.

1.UUU
Wrong Connections : Three Voltage wires and two wires from the CT on the main
Incomer connect the APFCR in the electrical system. The wiring
must be made correctly. The APFCR switches off all stages and
displays 2.uuu to warn the operator. This condition persists till
correct connections are made. 2. UUU
Meter : 4 digit Digital Meter : Range : 0.000 lag – 1.000 –0.000 lead.
PF Setting Range : The controller being intelligent, you have no settings to make.
It provide the best possible power factor under the system
Constraints.
Capacitor Switching : Standard Models are for 4,6,8 and 10 stages. The capacitors are
Switched in reverse order of their size after calculating the
requirements, i.e. the largest one in the chosen group is switched
on first. The capacitors are switched off in the order of their size,
i.e. the smallest capacitor is switched off first.
Contact Rating : Each contact is rated for maxima of 230 V, 5 Amps AC resistive
loads. Provide a 2 Amps fuse in the Common terminal, higher
rating fuse will cause damage to controller is case of a fault in
the contactor system.
