OBSTACLES TO RESPECTING TRUTH

WHAT DO YOU THINK HINDERS US TO RESPECT TRUTH?

1. Direct violation of truth(lying)

-lying is a direct violation of the eight commandment.

-upholding the truth, one must take into consideration that proper respect for the honor and good
name of others is protected.

-Perjury- is the intentional act of swearing a false oath or falsifying an affirmation to tell the truth,
whether spoken or in writing.

-Slander- is the legal term for the acts of harming a person’s reputation by telling one or more other
people something that is untrue and damaging about that person

WHY DO WE GOSSIP OR BACKBITE?

WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A TEENAGER TO CONFRONT THE REALITY OF GOSSIPING AND BACKBITING IN
YOUR IMMEDIATE COMMUNITY?

GOSSIPING AND BACKBITING

-Gossiping corrodes the foundation of trust and respect because its prejudiced, one-sided disclosure of
reality and the covert manner by which it is done.

-gossiping and backbiting have enslaved rather than liberated those who engage in it, causing alienation,
misunderstanding, quarrels, and even violence.

JESUSCHRIST teaches us that as a member of His body, the Church, we are responsible for helping the
erring members of our community in a manner that in consistent, direct, and loving. (Mt. 18: 15 – 17)
